Priyadarshan Sets the Record Straight on 'Bhooth Bangla' Comparisons
As excitement mounts for the April 2026 release of 'Bhooth Bangla', acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan has stepped forward to address the swirling comparisons to his 2007 cult favorite, 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa'. In a candid and detailed clarification, the director emphasized that while both films star Akshay Kumar and blend elements of horror and humor, the similarities largely end there.
Different Genres, Different Stories
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Priyadarshan firmly stated that 'Bhooth Bangla' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' possess entirely distinct storylines. He expressed concern over audience expectations, remarking, "The biggest problem is expectations. I don't want those; it's something I really hate." The filmmaker elaborated that every movie is unique, and his upcoming project should not be unfairly compared to past works.
Priyadarshan highlighted the fundamental genre differences between the two films. "Because basically, 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' is a psychological thriller, but 'Bhooth Bangla' is a fantasy," he explained. He further clarified that the fantasy elements in 'Bhooth Bangla' are rooted in cultural superstitions prevalent in India. "But fantasy is based on, okay, we have a lot of superstitions in our country… A lot of people believe in ghosts, and they do a lot of rituals."
Addressing Musical Similarities and Rumors
While acknowledging that both movies incorporate horror and humor, Priyadarshan stressed that their narrative approaches and thematic cores are divergent. He specifically addressed fan reactions to the song 'Ram Ji Aakar Bhala Karenge', which some felt evoked vibes similar to the 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' title track. The director confirmed that this similarity was intentional but limited to certain horror-inspired elements, reiterating that the projects remain fundamentally different.
In the same conversation, Priyadarshan also dispelled rumors linking 'Bhooth Bangla' to the sequel 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2'. He stated unequivocally, "I don’t want to take any credit for it. This has nothing to do with 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2'." He added that the upcoming horror film has no narrative connection to the Kartik Aaryan-starring sequel, further distinguishing it as a standalone venture.
Cast and Release Details
'Bhooth Bangla' is directed by Priyadarshan and features an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi, Jisshu Sengupta, Manoj Joshi, Mithila Palkar, Asrani, and Rajesh Sharma.
