Priyadarshan Opens Up About Film Industry Dynamics and Upcoming Projects

Renowned filmmaker Priyadarshan, celebrated for crafting some of Hindi cinema's most beloved comedies, maintains a straightforward philosophy: focus on making films and then move forward. In an exclusive conversation, he addressed swirling rumors about his projects, the prevalent culture of sequels, and his enthusiasm for current cinematic endeavors.

Bhooth Bangla Release Shift and Sequel Speculation

The release of his upcoming film Bhooth Bangla, starring Akshay Kumar, has been rescheduled to April, moving ahead from its original May slot. Priyadarshan clarified that this decision was solely made by the producers—Akshay Kumar, Ektaa Kapoor, and Shobha Kapoor. "I have no idea why that was done. It was entirely the decision of the makers. As far as I'm concerned, the film is ready," he stated.

He explained that the initial May release was postponed due to competition from major films, and he received a sudden call from Ektaa Kapoor proposing an earlier date. "I said okay because once I am done with the film, I don't get involved in those matters," he added, emphasizing his hands-off approach post-production.

Recent speculation suggested that Bhooth Bangla might have been conceived as a sequel to the hit film Bhool Bhulaiyaa, which Priyadarshan directed starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan. However, the filmmaker firmly dismissed these claims. "This is not true because neither I nor the producer Bhushan Kumar discussed a second part," he asserted.

Directing Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in Haiwaan

Priyadarshan shared insights into directing his upcoming film Haiwaan, featuring Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, and Paresh Rawal. While he has a long-standing relationship with Akshay, this marks his first collaboration with Saif Ali Khan. "He is so committed to what he does, and I enjoyed working with him. He comes to the set with so many questions, always wanting to understand every detail," Priyadarshan remarked.

He humorously described their dynamic: "So we've developed a great equation—I answer, and he keeps asking." This highlights Saif's dedication to his craft and the positive working environment on set.

Hera Pheri 3 Delays and Legal Complications

The much-anticipated Hera Pheri 3 continues to face significant hurdles, primarily due to legal disputes over franchise and music rights. Priyadarshan revealed that producer GP Vijayakumar has approached the Madras High Court, claiming copyright ownership instead of Firoz Nadiadwala. "There are a lot of complications around that," he noted.

He elaborated on the conflicts: "Even when part three was announced, certain people said they have the rights to the film, while others claimed rights to the music. Even Bhushan Kumar published a public notice stating that the music of part three belongs to his label." These issues must be resolved before production can proceed, and Priyadarshan confirmed that filming will definitely not begin this year.

Addressing past tensions with actor Paresh Rawal, who initially exited the project without informing him, Priyadarshan downplayed any lasting rift. "We have nothing against each other. I've been working with him for a long time," he said, reflecting on the industry's nature where relationships can endure despite occasional conflicts.

Disinterest in Sequels and Bhagam Bhag Development

Priyadarshan has consistently expressed his disinterest in directing sequels, viewing them as attempts to capitalize on the original film's success. "I'm never interested in making sequels because I feel that once the first film ends, the next one often tries to capitalize on its goodwill," he explained.

He confirmed that he was offered to direct the sequel to Bhagam Bhag but declined due to lack of interest. "They asked me to direct it, but I said no because I wasn't interested," he shared. Akshay Kumar informed him about his involvement in the sequel, to which Priyadarshan responded supportively, "Go ahead and do it. I have no problem with that."

The sequel will reportedly feature Manoj Bajpayee replacing Govinda, but Priyadarshan admitted, "I have no idea what they are doing or what the subject is."

Exciting New Project with Pankaj Tripathi

Looking ahead, Priyadarshan is particularly excited about his next project with actor Pankaj Tripathi, scheduled to start in June. While he remains guarded about specifics, he confirmed it is a full-fledged comedy. "I don't want to reveal much about it. It's a film starting in June and is an out-and-out comedy," he said, hinting at a promising addition to his comedic repertoire.

Throughout the discussion, Priyadarshan's focus on creativity over commercial trends shines through, underscoring his commitment to original storytelling in an industry increasingly driven by franchises and sequels.
