Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan is preparing to embark on his landmark 100th directorial venture, a project made particularly special by his reunion with superstar Mohanlal after a significant gap. The director, fresh from the release of his Bollywood film 'Bhoot Bangla,' has shared intriguing creative decisions about this milestone cinematic endeavor.
A Musical Father-Son Saga Without Mohanlal's Vocals
In a revealing interview with Mid Day, Priyadarshan detailed his ambitious project, which centers on a father and son who are both Carnatic singers. Despite the musical nature of the narrative, Priyadarshan has made a surprising creative choice: Mohanlal will not be singing in the film.
"It's a commercial entertainer with action, 12 songs, and a family drama at its heart," Priyadarshan explained. "Both characters are Carnatic singers, and I would want the father to be a newcomer, an elderly person with a background in Carnatic and Hindustani music, and Kathakali. Usually Kathakali performers are actors and singers."
The director elaborated on his reasoning for excluding Mohanlal's singing, despite acknowledging the actor's vocal talents: "Mohanlal sir sings very well. He has sung for movies before, but I won't make him sing in this film as it involves classical singing on a high level." Priyadarshan revealed that if legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam were alive, he would have requested him to play the father's role, highlighting the casting challenge this project presents.

Priyadarshan indicated that filming for this complicated musical project is scheduled to begin in November. "I will start my film with Mohanlal sir in November. It's a complicated film because it's a musical and will take me a lot of time to put together," he stated. Mohanlal is set to team up with Mammootty for the film 'Patriot,' scheduled for release on May 1. Meanwhile, Priyadarshan's latest Bollywood release 'Bhoot Bangla,' starring Akshay Kumar, has been performing at the box office with a net collection of Rs 15.75 crore and gross collections reaching approximately Rs 18.90 crore domestically. Globally, the horror comedy has accumulated around Rs 23.90 crore.
