"I was dealing with a lot when it comes to my work back in India, and I was trying to survive," Chopra explained. "My goal was simply to get another magazine feature, and that's the only way I could motivate myself each morning to tackle the small role I had to perform."
The actress recalled particularly difficult experiences, including waiting for up to fifteen hours on set only to have her scenes remain unshot that day. "Those are things I hadn't experienced in my career back home," she admitted. "But I was willing to endure it every morning because I was focused on the long-term vision. I was pursuing that legacy."
Defining and Redefining Legacy
Chopra offered profound insights into her evolving understanding of success and legacy throughout her career. She reflected on watching an old interview where she declared her desire for a legacy rather than just a career.
"I was going through something at that time and I just walked into this interview, just wrong, you know?" she recalled. "When your nerve endings hurt, and this was 11-12 years ago, I heard myself say, 'I want a legacy. I don't want a career, I want a legacy.' I've been thinking about what that meant for me at that time. What did that girl think a legacy would be?"
The actress emphasized how perspectives change over time: "What you think your success means at any given time of your life is going to be so different. And that was when I was just starting out in America."
Gratitude for Her Younger Self
Chopra expressed deep appreciation for the resilience of her younger self during those challenging early years in Hollywood. She described the emotional strength required to persevere through difficult moments.
"I'm so grateful for my younger self, as she was brave, and she was strong," Chopra shared. "Because of her tenacity, and her ability to put all my tears aside, put on my mascara again, wipe myself up, and go give that interview 20 minutes later looking pulled together, is the reason I can have a different definition of success today."
She acknowledged forgiving her younger self for choices she might not agree with now, recognizing that those decisions ultimately shaped her current success.

"My measure of success is being able to spend time with my family, to be able to pick up my daughter from school," Chopra explained. "To have the luxury to pick and choose work where I can craft time around my family and friends, while I navigate this insane career."
She credited her current opportunities to the relentless drive of her younger self: "It's only because of that girl who ran so fast that I have these choices today. I'm so grateful to my younger self for bringing me where I am today."
