SS Rajamouli Unveils Monumental Ramayana Sequence in Upcoming Film 'Varanasi'
Acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli has provided an exclusive glimpse into one of the most ambitious and creatively demanding sequences of his highly anticipated upcoming film, 'Varanasi'. In a candid interview, the director revealed intricate details about a 25-minute episode directly inspired by the mythological epic, the Ramayana, which required an extensive 60-day shooting schedule to complete.
The Epic Inspiration and Scale
Rajamouli, known for his grand cinematic visions, openly discussed the foundational inspirations behind his work. "Most of my films draw inspiration from the great Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana," he stated. "In 'Varanasi', I had the extraordinary opportunity to literally film a significant episode from the Ramayana." This sequence is not merely a single battle scene but a complex amalgamation of multiple sub-episodes, woven together to create a continuous 25-minute narrative segment within the film.
He elaborated on the unique structure, noting, "This entire episode is a combination of several sub-sub-episodes. Shooting each one felt like making an entire film on its own. The emotional journeys for the audience and the characters shift dramatically with each segment."
Unprecedented Creative and Technical Challenges
The director did not shy away from discussing the immense hurdles faced during production. "Each sub-episode presented distinct creative and technical challenges," Rajamouli explained. "Approaching each one was like starting a completely new film from scratch. That aspect was profoundly challenging."
He credited the successful execution to the collective effort of his entire team. "We had to pool all our intellectual resources and efforts to shoot this sequence. It was a 60-day endeavor, and it stands as one of the most satisfying accomplishments for all of us." Rajamouli reflected on the daily rigors, adding, "Every day was a challenge because each sub-episode within this larger sequence functioned as a standalone cinematic piece, requiring fresh planning and execution. We overcame all obstacles, and this will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable sequences in my filmography."
Personal Resonance and a Defining Moment
The Ramayana holds deep personal significance for Rajamouli. "I have often expressed my profound admiration for the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Making a Mahabharata film remains a dream project," he shared. "When I began work on 'Varanasi', I hadn't initially anticipated filming such a pivotal sequence from the Ramayana."
A particularly emotional highlight occurred when lead actor Mahesh Babu transformed into the character of Lord Rama. Rajamouli recounted the moment with palpable excitement: "On the first day, seeing Mahesh dressed as Rama during the photoshoot gave me goosebumps. I felt like I was walking on air." This moment underscored the personal and cultural weight the project carries for the director.
Star-Studded Cast and Release Details
'Varanasi' boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including global star Priyanka Chopra and acclaimed actor Prithviraj Sukumaran alongside Mahesh Babu. The film is officially scheduled for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027. This project marks another high-profile collaboration for Rajamouli, following his monumental successes with the 'Baahubali' series and 'RRR'.
