Rajamouli's Monumental 60-Day Shoot for Varanasi's Ramayana Sequence

In a recent revelation that has stunned the film industry, acclaimed director SS Rajamouli disclosed that shooting a single 25-minute sequence for his upcoming epic Varanasi required an astonishing 60 days of production. The sequence, deeply inspired by the Hindu epic Ramayana, features Mahesh Babu in the pivotal role of Lord Rama, a portrayal that left Rajamouli with goosebumps upon first sight.

A Cinematic Tribute to Indian Epics

Speaking to The Wrap, Rajamouli emphasized his longstanding creative connection to India's ancient scriptures. "Most of my films draw inspiration from the epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana," he stated. "In Varanasi, I had the unique opportunity to literally shoot an episode from the Ramayana, weaving together multiple sub-episodes into a cohesive 25-minute battle scene." This intricate narrative approach transformed each segment into a standalone cinematic challenge, demanding distinct emotional and technical executions.

The Grueling Production Process

Rajamouli described the shoot as akin to creating an entire film within a film, with each sub-episode presenting its own set of creative and technical hurdles. "For every part, it felt like approaching a completely new project," he explained. "We had to pool all our brainpower and effort, dedicating 60 days to capture what has become one of the most satisfying sequences of my career." The director confidently predicted that this segment will stand out as one of the most memorable in his filmography.

Mahesh Babu's Transformative Role

The emotional high point came when Rajamouli first witnessed Mahesh Babu in full costume as Rama. "I felt like I was walking on air," he recalled. "On the first day, seeing Mahesh dressed as Rama during the photoshoot gave me goosebumps." Earlier, Mahesh Babu, who plays a character named Rudra in the film, discussed the physical and emotional demands of portraying Lord Rama, noting the need for a distinct posture that diverges from modern characterizations.

Star-Studded Cast and Release Details

Varanasi boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast beyond Mahesh Babu. Priyanka Chopra takes on the role of Mandakini, a mysterious thief, while Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays the chief antagonist, Kumbha. The film is eagerly anticipated and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027, promising to deliver Rajamouli's signature blend of mythological grandeur and cinematic spectacle.
