Rajpal Yadav Granted Interim Bail After 12 Days in Tihar Jail
The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to veteran Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav on February 16, 2026, following his 12-day incarceration in Tihar Jail. The bail is valid until March 18, 2026, providing temporary relief in a long-standing financial dispute.
Court Conditions and Financial Settlement
The bail was approved after Yadav deposited a substantial sum of ₹1.5 crore directly into the complainant's bank account. Additionally, he furnished the necessary bonds and security as mandated by the court. This development comes after the actor surrendered to authorities on February 5, 2026, complying with a High Court order that sentenced him to six months in jail.
The case revolves around a cheque bounce and debt issue totaling ₹9 crore, which originated in 2010. The financial troubles began when Rajpal Yadav secured a loan to finance his directorial project, Ata Pata Laapata. The subsequent bounced cheques triggered prolonged legal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act, ultimately leading to the recent custodial order.
Legal Perspective and Defense Arguments
Rajpal Yadav's lawyer, Bhaskar Upadhyay, provided insights into the legal battle. "Initially, it was very challenging to navigate the situation due to multiple failed commitments, and the court showed little inclination to offer any relief," Upadhyay stated. "Fortunately, with divine grace and the unwavering support of Rajpal ji's well-wishers, we managed to honor the prior commitments presented to the court."
Upadhyay emphasized that the court recognized Yadav's intentions were not malicious, but rather his circumstances were unfavorable. "He genuinely lacked the financial means at the time of his incarceration," the lawyer explained. He further questioned the complainant's actions, noting, "We hope the court will consider our submissions regarding why the complainant opted not to secure the debt in 2018, as per the consent decree, and instead pursued jail time. How many times must Rajpal ji face imprisonment for the same issue?"
Overwhelming Support from Bollywood and Fans
The actor received an outpouring of support from numerous Bollywood celebrities and countless fans during his ordeal. This solidarity played a significant role in bolstering his morale throughout the legal process.
Rajpal Yadav's Emotional Response and Future Plans
While en route to Shahjahanpur to attend his niece's wedding, Rajpal Yadav expressed profound gratitude. "I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who prayed for me," he said. "For the past 25 years, Hindi cinema has embraced me like a cherished child, enabling me to work on 250 films. During this challenging incident, whether through social media or other means, I am deeply thankful to all who blessed me, prayed for me, or offered assistance."
He added, "I have felt everyone's empathy for 25 years, but I request a little more time. As a workaholic, I need time more than sympathy."
Reflecting on his release, Yadav mentioned, "I was just released today and require a few days to fully comprehend the events that transpired in my absence. I will address everyone appropriately once I have collected my thoughts. Although I have not yet retrieved my mobile phone, I remained confident that Indian cinema and people everywhere love and support me—this is my unshakable belief."
Regarding the debt, he clarified, "I never stated I would not repay the money. However, I prefer to refrain from further comment to avoid any risk of dishonoring the court."
Looking ahead, the actor shared a philosophical outlook: "Moving forward, I will strive to melt more than wax if I am at fault and become smaller, but if truth is on my side, I will become stronger than iron."
