Rana Daggubati's Health Battle: Returning Film Advances to Prioritize Survival

In a candid and revealing interview, actor Rana Daggubati has shared the stark reality of the health crisis that dramatically altered his career trajectory. The celebrated star of the Baahubali franchise disclosed that after experiencing kidney failure and serious heart complications following the film's monumental success, he made the difficult decision to return advance payments for several high-profile projects.

A Life-Saving Transplant and Physical Transformation

Having undergone a critical kidney transplant in the United States, Rana explained that his physical appearance underwent significant changes. He no longer resembled the "hot guy" or the imposing warrior figure that filmmakers had originally cast him to portray. "Staying alive was my first concern," he admitted, reflecting on a period where survival took precedence over stardom.

During this challenging phase, his primary objective was simply to remain alive, with all other considerations—including his flourishing career and public image—becoming secondary priorities.

The Decision to Return Film Advances

Speaking on the talk show Chapter 2, hosted by Rhea Chakraborty, Rana revealed a surprising professional decision that caught many by surprise. He chose to return the advance payments for multiple films he had already signed, including a project centered around a "big-a** wrestler" and similar ambitious roles.

"I had several films lined up. I don't resemble any of those characters. I was returning advances, and all that was happening," he recounted. Rather than delaying productions or compromising on creative expectations due to his altered physical state, he opted to refund the money entirely.

Identity Reflections and Amusing Anecdotes

Rana's appearance also sparked some confusing and poignant memories during his recovery. He recalled an immigration official addressing him as "King Bhallaladeva," which vividly brought back memories of his iconic villainous role from Baahubali.

In one particularly amusing incident, he described meeting his friend, actor Varun Tej, who suddenly began to look more like the "old Rana" than Rana himself. "He's a really big guy as well. Halfway through our conversation, he started looking more like me than I actually did," said Rana, noting that while he found humor in the situation, not recognizing his own familiar self was ultimately disconcerting.

A Selective and Purposeful Comeback

Upon his return to the entertainment industry, Rana Daggubati approached his career with a renewed perspective on life. He now maintains strict standards and focuses only on projects he deems genuinely important.

His recent and upcoming endeavors include:

  • Leading the 2025 film Kaantha opposite Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, and Samuthirakani, which he also co-produced
  • Making guest appearances in Mirai and Parasakthi
  • Continuing with Rana Naidu Season 2
  • Hosting The Rana Daggubati Show
  • Providing voice work for Solo Leveling

Rana's journey serves as a powerful inspiration, demonstrating that character, health, and self-confidence hold far greater value than merely portraying larger-than-life characters on screen.
