Ranveer Singh Left Don 3 Over Creative Differences on Violent Tone
Ranveer Singh Left Don 3 Over Creative Differences on Tone

It is no longer a secret that Ranveer Singh has stepped away from the highly anticipated film 'Don 3', directed by Farhan Akhtar. While earlier reports attributed the split to generic creative differences, a new report has shed more light on the specific reasons behind the fallout.

Ranveer's Vision for a Grittier Don

According to the Free Press Journal, Ranveer Singh, who is currently enjoying the success of his 'Dhurandhar' franchise, was keen on giving the character of Don a more intense and violent edge. He reportedly pushed for the inclusion of strong language, believing that the character should change his DNA to match the current violent tone that audiences seem to favor today. The actor felt that a more aggressive portrayal would resonate better with modern viewers.

Farhan Akhtar's Stance

Farhan Akhtar, however, was not on the same page. The filmmaker stood firm against incorporating harsh language into the narrative, maintaining that earlier iterations of Don never relied on such elements. He pointed out that even versions led by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan avoided excessive profanity. Insiders suggest that Farhan was unwilling to bow to any external pressure, with a source stating, "Farhan very much wanted to make the film he originally set out to make."

Farhan Breaks Silence

Recently, Farhan broke his silence on the 'Don 3' controversy amid a legal battle. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he said, "What I have learnt is to expect the unexpected. Nothing can be taken for granted till you actually have it on film. Honestly, I also feel that from the time I began—from that moment that an Aamir, Akshaye, Preity, Dimple, Saif, Ritesh as my partner—till they come on and said yes 'let's make this film'—from that moment on, actually all the way pretty much through till 2022, which is 22-23 years, I have had the most incredible ride."

He added, "It has just been working with the people that I want to work with, whether directing them or acting in films that I want to act in with directors. So it has been amazing. And you realize that at some point, there will be a period that's going to come along that is going to be a little bit more challenging then. You've had it good. So it's okay, you just take it in your stride."

Legal and Financial Repercussions

Ranveer eventually exited the project in 2025, with the disagreement becoming public amid reports of script-related issues and delays. It was also reported that Excel Entertainment sought Rs 40 crore in compensation, citing costs incurred during pre-production, scheduling disruptions, and other associated losses. The production house maintained that much of the groundwork had been completed with Ranveer's consent, and the actor has reportedly agreed to repay a portion of the amount.

This development marks a significant moment in Bollywood, highlighting the creative tensions that can arise between actors and directors over the direction of a beloved franchise. Fans are now left wondering what the future holds for 'Don 3' and who might step into the iconic role.
