Sharib Hashmi Candidly Discusses Missed Opportunities in Major Bollywood Films
Bollywood actor Sharib Hashmi is speaking openly about career opportunities that slipped through his fingers, revealing that two significant missed roles continue to linger in his memory. In a recent interview, the actor expressed his lingering regrets about not being cast in two major commercial successes that went on to define careers.
The Sanju Regret: Missing the Kamli Role
Sharib Hashmi disclosed that he was deeply involved in the casting process for Rajkumar Hirani's biographical drama Sanju, specifically for the pivotal role of Kamli. This character, which eventually went to Vicky Kaushal, became one of the film's most memorable performances.
The actor revealed to Filmygyan: "I have one big regret about Sanju. For the role of Kamli, I was quite shortlisted, and the process continued for quite some time. So that remains a regret for me."
Hashmi explained that he progressed significantly through the selection stages, spending considerable time in contention before the role ultimately went to another actor. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, went on to become a massive box office success and critical darling.
The Bajrangi Bhaijaan Audition Experience
Beyond Sanju, Sharib Hashmi also discussed his audition experience for Kabir Khan's emotional drama Bajrangi Bhaijaan, starring Salman Khan. The actor revealed he auditioned for the role eventually played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, progressing through multiple rounds of auditions before being ultimately passed over.
"Then, for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the role that Nawazuddin Siddiqui played, I had auditioned for that as well and was shortlisted," Hashmi explained. "I went through a few rounds of auditions, but that's a matter of destiny."
Both films represent significant milestones in contemporary Bollywood cinema, with Bajrangi Bhaijaan becoming one of Salman Khan's most beloved performances and Sanju breaking numerous box office records upon its release.
Perspective on Destiny and Career Paths
Despite these professional disappointments, Sharib Hashmi maintains a philosophical perspective on his career trajectory. Describing the outcomes as "naseeb ki baat" (a matter of destiny), the actor acknowledged that despite coming remarkably close to landing these career-defining roles, some opportunities simply aren't meant to be.
This reflective approach demonstrates how actors in the competitive Bollywood industry must navigate both successes and near-misses while maintaining professional resilience. Hashmi's willingness to discuss these experiences openly provides rare insight into the casting processes of major Indian films and the emotional landscape actors navigate behind the scenes.
The entertainment industry frequently presents such crossroads where talented performers come tantalizingly close to breakthrough roles that ultimately go to others. Hashmi's candid revelations highlight the human aspect of filmmaking beyond the glamour and success stories typically showcased in media coverage.
His perspective serves as a reminder that even in an industry driven by visibility and opportunity, factors beyond talent and preparation sometimes determine career trajectories. The actor's mature outlook on these missed chances reflects the wisdom gained through years of navigating Bollywood's unpredictable landscape.
