Director Shawn Levy Champions AI as Future 'Essential' Filmmaking Tool

Renowned Hollywood director Shawn Levy is making a compelling case for artificial intelligence in the film industry. The filmmaker behind the upcoming space opera Star Wars: Starfighter believes AI will become an indispensable tool for movie creators in the coming years, advocating for its responsible integration rather than fear-based rejection.

Embracing Technology While Preserving Creative Vision

In a recent interview with Variety, Levy acknowledged that he has not yet incorporated artificial intelligence "in any meaningful way" throughout his storytelling career. However, he expressed absolute certainty that this will change dramatically during his professional journey. "I have no doubt that in the course of my career we will see its integration," Levy stated with conviction.

The director emphasized that the key lies in implementing these emerging technologies responsibly while maintaining the primacy of human creativity. "It's about integrating these technologies responsibly and with still the primacy of the creative voice and not a potential replacement for that voice," Levy explained. "I think that what you get from creative voice and vision is singular and irreplicable."

From Emerging Technology to Essential Component

Levy spends part of each day increasing his understanding of regulatory options surrounding artificial intelligence, demonstrating his serious commitment to technological literacy. He believes that denying AI's inevitable role in filmmaking represents a dangerous form of naivete.

"I think it's going to be essential, but I think to hide our heads in the sand and pretend that it's not going to be not just an emergent but an essential part of our lives, not just filmmaking lives, (but) lives lives, I think that would be naive and foolish," Levy asserted with characteristic directness.

The director maintains that if filmmakers can harness AI's emerging capabilities to support storytelling while maintaining a "creative and human first workflow," then the technology represents something to welcome enthusiastically rather than dread.

Current Focus: Crafting Star Wars: Starfighter

While contemplating AI's future role, Levy is currently immersed in post-production for his highly anticipated project Star Wars: Starfighter, scheduled for release on May 28, 2027. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, and Aaron Pierre.

Levy is enjoying an unusually relaxed editing timeline with over a year remaining before the film's premiere. "I'm in the beautiful sanctity of the edit room," he shared. "We don't come out until next year, and so it's a rare movie where I don't have a release date looming. So I'm in the dark quiet of the edit room finding the best possible shape for the film."

Balancing Epic Scale with Intimate Storytelling

In January, Levy revealed his creative approach for Star Wars: Starfighter, drawing inspiration from his experience with the hit series Stranger Things. He aims to balance spectacular visuals with deeply personal character narratives.

"If I've learned anything on Stranger Things, it's that you can get intimidated by the scale of franchise expectation," Levy told The Hollywood Reporter. "But you will lose your way if that's your focus."

The director emphasized maintaining focus on character development, thematic depth, and on-screen relationships despite the project's massive scale. "Yes, there's spectacle and scale, just like Stranger Things. And of course, Star Wars and Starfighter has spectacle and scale and adventure at a level I've never done in my whole career," Levy acknowledged. "But like Stranger Things, it's also very much anchored in a human scale, character-sized story."

Levy believes that successfully balancing "the epic and the intimate" in the manner achieved by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer will enable him to deliver a satisfying cinematic experience for both dedicated fans and general audiences alike.
