Shekhar Kapur's Unplanned Path to Filmmaking Stardom
Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, celebrated for iconic movies like 'Mr India' and 'Masoom', has disclosed a surprising truth about his career origins. Contrary to popular belief, Kapur never intentionally chose filmmaking as his profession. Instead, his journey into the cinematic world unfolded unexpectedly after he initially pursued a career as a Chartered Accountant.
A Nostalgic Reflection on Instagram
In a recent heartfelt Instagram post, Kapur reminisced about a pivotal moment in his life. "That was the night before I left India for London to become a Chartered Accountant," he wrote. "Life seemed set. It was the best qualification you could have then, promising a great job upon return, high status in the marriage market, membership to the Delhi Gymkhana Club, and a comfortable retirement playing bridge among the elite."
However, fate had other plans. Kapur revealed that after qualifying and working a couple of jobs in London, he walked away from the accounting profession. "I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, so I just walked away into nothingness. I had no choice," he confessed, highlighting the uncertainty that marked this transition.
Questioning Destiny and Karma
Kapur delved deeper into philosophical musings, questioning whether destiny or karma guided the unexpected turns his life took. His path led him not only to acting and filmmaking in India and Hollywood but also to theatrical productions in the West End, Broadway, Europe, and Dubai. Additionally, he founded India's first digital startup, taught at MIT, and served on the boards of Singapore's Media Development Authority and the Dubai Expo.
"Or did I? Is there Karma involved? It’s not like I did nothing," Kapur reflected. "I acted and made Movies/TV in India and Hollywood. I created theatrical productions... I created India’s first Digital Start Up. I taught at MIT... And so much more... because I had no choice... because I, like a child, walked through any door that opened... for I had no choice... I had no choice?"
Reflecting on Life's Unpredictable Forces
The filmmaker pondered the extent of control individuals truly have over their lives, considering the unpredictable forces that shape human existence. "We don’t control when we were born. When we die. When we fall in love or out of love... when we are betrayed (or betray)," he noted. "Looking back, I ask myself this: did you control what you did, or was it supposed to happen? Or were you just rebellious? Or just constantly giving into the flow of life?"
Kapur concluded with a profound question: "Did I have a choice... or was it supposed to happen? Karma, Destiny... really?" This introspection offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a creative genius who attributes his multifaceted career to serendipity rather than deliberate planning.
Recent Activities and Praise for 'Dhurandhar'
In other news, Kapur recently reviewed the film 'Dhurandhar' after its OTT release, praising it highly. He explained that he watched the film only now due to its ban in Dubai, which prevented him from seeing it in theaters. This update underscores Kapur's ongoing engagement with the entertainment industry, even as he reflects on his unconventional journey.
Shekhar Kapur's story serves as an inspiring reminder that life's most rewarding paths are often unplanned, driven by curiosity and openness to new opportunities rather than rigid career blueprints.
