Shobhaa De Slams AR Rahman's 'Communal' Remark on Bollywood
Noted novelist and columnist Shobhaa De has strongly criticized music composer AR Rahman's recent comment about the Hindi film industry becoming "communal." She labeled his statement as "dangerous" during an interview with ANI.
De's Firm Rebuttal to Rahman's Observation
Shobhaa De expressed her disagreement with Rahman's view. She emphasized her long-term observation of Bollywood over fifty years. De argued that Bollywood remains a space free from communal tensions. She stated that talent alone determines opportunities in the industry. Religion does not play a role in securing work, according to her perspective.
"This is a very dangerous comment," De told ANI. "I don't know why he has said it. If I have seen any place free of communal tensions, it is Bollywood. If you have talent, you will get opportunities. Religion is not a factor in whether you get work or not."
She acknowledged Rahman's success and maturity but felt he should not have made such a remark. De suggested he might have personal reasons for his statement.

AR Rahman made his observations during an interview with BBC Asian Network. He revealed receiving significantly less work in Bollywood over the past eight years. Rahman attributed this decline to the industry becoming "communal." He clarified that he has not directly experienced discrimination himself.

Rahman described hearing indirect feedback, like "Chinese whispers," about missed opportunities. He expressed contentment with his current situation, preferring work to come to him naturally.
"Maybe in the past eight years because a power shift has happened. People who are not creative have the power now. It might be a communal thing also... but it is not in my face," Rahman said.
