Shah Rukh Khan Applauds 'Saiyaara' Marketing Strategy, Reveals Director Mohit Suri

The 2025 Bollywood film 'Saiyaara' generated significant buzz not only for its box office success but also for its innovative promotional tactics that deliberately kept lead actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda away from the spotlight. Director Mohit Suri recently disclosed that superstar Shah Rukh Khan personally praised this unconventional approach during a conversation at Siddharth Anand's Diwali party.

Strategic Focus on Music Over Star Power

In an exclusive interview with Variety India, Suri elaborated on the marketing philosophy behind 'Saiyaara.' The filmmakers consciously avoided the traditional promotional circuit of interviews and media appearances for their newcomers, instead channeling resources toward promoting the film's music and narrative.

"This is not a PR thing," emphasized Suri. "The great Shah Rukh Khan told me this is the best thing we did. Because we didn't have established stars, we concentrated on creating exceptional music and spent our promotional budget pushing that instead of sending actors for interviews like everyone does."

The director believes this authenticity paid dividends, as curiosity about the mysterious new actors combined with strong musical promotion drove audiences to theaters. The strategy represented a significant departure from Bollywood's typical star-centric marketing campaigns.

Ahaan Panday's Challenging Casting Journey

Despite receiving a recommendation from Aditya Chopra himself, Ahaan Panday faced substantial hurdles before securing his role as Krish Kapoor in 'Saiyaara.' Suri recounted how Chopra insisted the young actor visit the director's personal workspace rather than meeting at the corporate YRF office.

"My office is not like a corporate office. It's like a pad - a den where I sit and write," described Suri. "It's a simple two-bedroom apartment with a garden outside where I do my writing and music. When Ahaan came there, I didn't find him like Krish Kapoor at all initially. I found him to be a sweet, really soft boy."

The director revealed that he actually rejected Panday after two or three meetings, telling Chopra the actor wasn't right for the character. This candid admission highlights the rigorous selection process that eventually led to Panday's breakthrough performance.

Newcomers' Controlled Public Exposure

Both Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda participated in select promotional activities but avoided the exhaustive media rounds typically expected of Bollywood newcomers. This calculated restraint created an aura of mystery that Suri believes enhanced audience interest.

"They were doing their bit but not the regular interviews and marketing and other stuff," Suri explained. "We spent that money on pushing the music instead. And it all paid back. It all went very authentic."

The success of 'Saiyaara' demonstrates how strategic marketing focusing on artistic elements rather than star power can resonate with both audiences and industry veterans like Shah Rukh Khan. The film's approach may influence how future projects introduce new talent to the Bollywood landscape.
