Subodh Bhave on Portraying Neem Karoli Baba: 'The Saint Chose Me'
Subodh Bhave: Neem Karoli Baba Chose Me for Film Role

Subodh Bhave Reflects on Divine Selection for Neem Karoli Baba Role

In a profound revelation, acclaimed actor Subodh Bhave has opened up about his upcoming portrayal of the revered spiritual figure Neem Karoli Baba in the film "Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj". Bhave expressed a unique perspective on his casting, stating that when depicting a saint, it is not the actor who chooses the character, but rather the character who chooses the actor.

A Meeting Orchestrated by Fate

Bhave detailed how he came to be involved with the project. Director Sharad Singh Thakur had been developing the film for four to five years, with previous attempts to assemble a cast and crew proving unsuccessful. In January 2025, Bhave learned through a writer friend that Thakur wished to meet him.

"When we met, he shared his vision to create a film about Baba and asked me to take on the role," Bhave recalled. "At that point, my knowledge of Neem Karoli Baba was limited—I had only seen a photograph and heard mentions in passing. It was through Sharad ji that I truly became acquainted with Baba and his life."

The Spiritual Connection and Surrender

Reflecting on the experience of portraying a saint, Bhave emphasized a sense of divine intervention. "I always believe that in films about saints, the character selects the actor. In my case, I feel Baba chose me to portray him," he said. This belief shaped his entire approach to the role, moving away from traditional acting methods.

Bhave praised director Sharad Singh Thakur's extensive preparation, noting that Thakur spent years researching Neem Karoli Baba's life by meeting those who lived with him and even interacting with his family. "He shared every detail and practice he followed during those years. When your director arrives with that level of dedication, you don't need to look elsewhere. You simply listen and internalize everything," Bhave explained.

Letting Go of Performance for Devotion

The actor described a transformative process on set. "As an actor, you often want to perform, but here, you don't have to do anything. Baba does what is needed—you just have to remain devoted and surrender yourself," he shared. Bhave attributed any success in his performance to spiritual guidance, saying, "Whatever has been done in the film, I feel it has been done through me by Him. If people appreciate my performance, it is Baba's blessing; if there are mistakes, they are mine."
