Sudipto Sen's 'Charak' Film Denied Certification, Under Review

Sudipto Sen's Controversial Film 'Charak: Fair of Faith' Faces Certification Hurdle

Filmmaker Sudipto Sen, who previously ignited nationwide debate with his film 'The Kerala Story', finds himself once again at the epicenter of controversy. His upcoming cinematic project, titled 'Charak: Fair of Faith', which was originally slated for a theatrical release on March 6, has encountered a significant roadblock. The Central Board of Film Certification has officially refused to grant the film its certification and has instead forwarded it to a review committee for further evaluation, thereby placing its entire release timeline in a state of profound uncertainty.

Film Portrays Extreme Rituals as Documented Reality

Following the launch of the film's teaser, director Sudipto Sen provided detailed insights into the narrative's core. He described 'Charak: Fair of Faith' as a factual and unflinching portrayal of certain extreme ritualistic practices that are allegedly associated with fringe cult groups operating within the country. According to Sen's statements, the film's narrative meticulously examines and presents alleged acts such as human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism. He emphasizes that these elements are portrayed not as fictional horror tropes designed for entertainment, but rather as documented realities based on investigative material.

CBFC Recommends Cuts, Reasons Remain Unclear

The director has confirmed that the Central Board of Film Certification has recommended specific edits to the film, with particular focus on scenes that visually depict acts of cannibalism. However, Sen maintains a position of confusion regarding the board's ultimate decision. He expressed that the exact and comprehensive reasons for withholding the certification were not fully or clearly explained to him during the process.

"I genuinely do not have a clear idea why the clearance was denied. I am willing to even opt for certain cuts and sacrifice some visuals for the film’s sake. But now the bigger question is lurking on my film itself. At this juncture, I can only be hopeful," Sen shared in a conversation with News18.

He further added, "In our last meeting, I was told the film would be evaluated sympathetically. We have presented documented material, not fiction. However, truth is always uncomfortable."

Director Insists on Exposure, Not Provocation

Sudipto Sen firmly insists that the primary intention behind 'Charak: Fair of Faith' is not to inflame communal or religious sentiments, but rather to spotlight and expose unlawful activities that are allegedly carried out under the guise of belief and faith. He posed a critical question, "If something illegal is happening in the name of faith, should the cinema look away?" Sen elaborated by stating, "My work is to bring facts before society."

The film's disturbing thematic elements are reportedly amplified as it also touches upon the sensitive issue of missing persons' disappearances, hinting at possible connections to underground ritualistic networks. This adds another layer of gravity to the project's contentious subject matter.

From 'The Kerala Story' to a New Storm

The current situation carries a distinct sense of irony. Sen's earlier work, 'The Kerala Story', faced intense criticism and backlash for allegedly targeting and misrepresenting a specific religious community. In contrast, his new film, 'Charak: Fair of Faith', is reported to examine and portray extreme practices within certain Hindu sects and fringe groups, marking a shift in the perceived focus of his cinematic scrutiny.

Reflecting on the initial pushback and resistance his new project has faced, Sen remarked, "Even though I do not know the reasons for such resistance, ideological or otherwise, the first and the basic response to the film did not seem encouraging to me. However, after the release of the teaser, I got a huge response from my well-wishers."

For the time being, the ultimate fate and theatrical prospects of 'Charak: Fair of Faith' rest entirely in the hands of the CBFC's review committee. The film's journey to the big screen remains shrouded in uncertainty, awaiting a decisive verdict that will determine whether audiences will witness Sudipto Sen's latest provocative exploration of faith and extremism.
