Suraj Venjaramoodu Embraces Tamil Cinema with Coming-of-Age Drama 'Youth'
Following his impactful performance in 'Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2', acclaimed Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu makes a significant return to Tamil cinema with 'Youth', a compelling coming-of-age drama directed by Ken Karunaas. Known for his remarkable versatility in Malayalam films, Suraj takes on a parental role in this theatrical release designed to resonate with audiences across all age demographics.
A Narration That Felt Like Watching a Film
Recalling his initial meeting with director Ken Karunaas, Suraj reveals how the storytelling session left an indelible mark. "When Ken traveled to Kerala to narrate the story, he performed every character with such authentic emotion. I had never experienced a narration like that before. He was like Anniyan, completely on fire, making me feel as though I was already watching the film. His narration even included what felt like a re-recording session. I could visualize the entire movie, and now seeing the final product, 'Youth' has exceeded our expectations," Suraj shared in an exclusive conversation.
Overcoming Hesitation Through Conviction
Initially uncertain about collaborating with a debutant director, Suraj admits that Ken's unwavering conviction changed his perspective. "I see reflections of my younger self in him. Early in my career, someone gave me an opportunity, and now it's my turn to do the same. He put in tremendous effort to reach out to me," the actor adds. He emphasizes that 'Youth' transcends teenage themes, connecting deeply with viewers from multiple generations.
The Universal Language of Acting
Despite building his career primarily in Malayalam cinema, Suraj firmly believes that language does not change the fundamental essence of acting. "The approach to any character remains consistent, rooted in the script. I need to understand the character's background thoroughly. For instance, in 'Youth', my character is Malayali. While the foundational approach is universal, I absorb the specific emotional nuances and linguistic context from observations and the setting," he explains.
Why Theatrical Cinema Remains Unmatched
In an era dominated by reels, OTT platforms, and digital content consumption, Suraj passionately advocates for the unique power of the theatrical experience. "Cinema is always distinct. Theatres provide a complete immersive experience, whereas other mediums simply allow you to watch content. Big screens possess a special magic that enables you to truly live a story," he states, highlighting the irreplaceable impact of cinema halls.
A Continuous Journey of Learning and Exploration
From portraying menacing roles in 'Veera Dheera Sooran' to being part of critically acclaimed films like 'The Great Indian Kitchen', 'Android Kunjappan', and 'L2: Empuraan', Suraj has navigated a diverse spectrum of characters. Yet, he insists that the learning process never ceases. "I am still learning, and there is so much more to accomplish. Acting is an ongoing, evolving journey," he shares.
Navigating Different Cinematic Landscapes
With over two decades in the industry, the actor notes distinct differences when working across languages. While Malayalam films often allow for greater spontaneity, Tamil projects demand more structured preparation. "In Malayalam cinema, if I understand the story thoroughly, I can improvise dialogues on the spot. However, for Tamil roles, I must dedicate time to learning the language and preparing meticulously," he observes.
What Lies Ahead for Suraj Venjaramoodu
Suraj's Tamil film journey continues to expand with several high-profile projects in development. His upcoming slate includes 'Kara' starring Dhanush, 'Jailer 2' featuring Rajinikanth, and 'Texla' directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth, signaling his growing presence in the Tamil film industry.
