Tumbbad 2 Officially Launches Production with Mahurat Ceremony in Mumbai
The highly anticipated sequel to the cult classic horror-fantasy film Tumbbad has officially entered production, with the team kicking off filming through a traditional mahurat ceremony held in Mumbai. This major development comes after years of speculation and growing fan demand, particularly following the successful 2024 theatrical re-release of the original film, which introduced Tumbbad to a broader audience and reignited excitement for a follow-up.
Star-Studded Launch and Production Scale
The mahurat shot ceremony brought together several prominent figures from the Indian film industry, underscoring the project's significance and scale right from its inception. As reported by Mid-Day, attendees included producer Dr. Jayantilal Gada, Dhaval Gada, noted filmmaker Boney Kapoor, and producer Tutu Sharma, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this ambitious sequel.
Leading the film is actor-producer Sohum Shah, who reprises his role and spearheads the project under his banner, Sohum Shah Films. The buzz around the sequel has been further amplified by the confirmed involvement of acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, adding considerable star power and anticipation among cinephiles.
Massive Set and Immersive World-Building
Filming is currently underway on an expansive set spanning 7 to 8 acres in Mumbai, meticulously constructed to resemble an entire city. This early production detail vividly illustrates the grand scale and immersive world-building that the makers are aiming for with Tumbbad 2. According to the production team, Sohum Shah Films is dedicated to creating a more enriched and captivating universe for this second chapter, with the opening schedule designed on a significantly larger canvas compared to its predecessor.
Legacy of the Original and Sequel Details
The original Tumbbad, released in 2018, has garnered a devoted cult following over the years and is widely celebrated as one of the most compelling Hindi fantasy-folklore films. Its narrative depth, visual artistry, and unique blend of horror and mythology have earned it critical acclaim and a lasting place in Indian cinema. The 2024 re-release not only introduced the film to new viewers but also solidified the clamor for a sequel, keeping interest levels consistently high since the announcement of Tumbbad 2.
Directed by Adesh Prasad, the sequel promises to expand upon the eerie and mythological themes that defined the first film. In earlier revelations, prosthetic designer Shaune Harrison provided insights into the intricate physical transformation work required for the production. He explained, "The team had to carefully design multiple prosthetic pieces to maintain visual continuity throughout the shoot. I mean, there is one main character that we're doing, for which we go through three different looks. And they're quite extensive makeups. Obviously, we'll have double makeups as well, because we always want to make sure, you know, with any film you do, you'll have a stunt double and the acting double."
Future Updates and Anticipation
With filming now in progress, Tumbbad 2 has entered its next crucial phase, and fans can expect more updates from the set as production advances. The combination of a dedicated creative team, high-profile cast, and substantial production investment positions this sequel as one of the most awaited projects in contemporary Bollywood, poised to deliver a cinematic experience that honors its predecessor while exploring new horizons in the horror-fantasy genre.
