Udaybir Sandhu Reflects on Missed 'Amar Singh Chamkila' Role and Career Journey
Fresh from the acclaim of his recent film 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', actor Udaybir Sandhu is enjoying the spotlight that has finally turned his way. In the movie, he portrayed Pinda, the loyal friend to Ranveer Singh's character, a role that resonated deeply with audiences and marked a significant milestone in his career.
The Audition That Almost Changed Everything
In a candid revelation, Udaybir shared that he auditioned for the lead role in the 2024 biopic 'Amar Singh Chamkila', which ultimately went to Diljit Dosanjh. He disclosed this in an interview with Hindustan Times, stating, "I had auditioned for Chamkila's part. I had done a lot of research and I was totally invested in it. I was the one who was liked for the part." Despite his strong performance and dedication, the filmmakers had a different vision for the character.
Why the Role Slipped Away
According to Udaybir, director Imtiaz Ali was firm on casting a singer for the role of the legendary Punjabi musician. He explained, "He always wanted a singer... they didn't think a non-singer would be able to perform it." This requirement led to the part going to Diljit Dosanjh, a renowned singer-actor, despite Udaybir's impressive audition.
No Grudges, Only Reflection
Despite missing out on what could have been a career-defining opportunity, Udaybir holds no resentment. He reflected on the casting decision, saying, "When I got to know that Diljit had been cast for the role instead of me, I understood the decision. He did a great job in the film, but I could have played it very well too because I was invested." Interestingly, this audition opened another door for him, as it later earned him the role of late Punjabi singer Shinda in the same film.
The Value of Struggle in an Actor's Life
Looking back at his journey, Udaybir believes that facing challenges has enriched his current successes. He emphasized, "If you get a chance early on, it's almost like a fluke... you stop doing that kind of hard work. So you need that struggle, that hustle." This philosophy underscores his approach to navigating the competitive Bollywood industry.
A Glimpse into Udaybir Sandhu's Diverse Career
Udaybir's career spans various roles and backgrounds. He made his Bollywood debut in the 2018 film 'Gold', starring alongside Akshay Kumar. A former national-level hockey player from Punjab, he even trained actors for hockey scenes in the movie. Prior to 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', he appeared in 'Ikk Kudi' opposite Shehnaaz Gill, steadily building his presence in the entertainment world.
The film 'Amar Singh Chamkila' also featured Parineeti Chopra in a key role, adding to its star-studded cast.
