Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has been slapped with a Rs 500 challan for creating a nuisance inside public property after a video of him hanging from grab handles in a Mumbai Metro coach went viral on social media. The clip, which spread rapidly online, drew sharp criticism from daily commuters and led the metro operator to take immediate action.
Metro Operator Issues Stern Warning
The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), responsible for the metro's operations, clarified that the grab handles inside coaches are designed solely to provide support to standing passengers. They are not intended for hanging or performing any kind of stunts. In a strongly worded statement, the operator emphasized that such reckless behavior not only endangers the individual involved but also poses significant risks to fellow commuters, especially during sudden braking or in crowded conditions.
Public Advisory Against "Movie-Style Stunts"
In a post on the social media platform X, MMMOCL explicitly cautioned passengers against imitating what it described as "movie-style stunts" inside metro coaches. The operator stressed that public transport systems are shared spaces governed by strict safety norms and regulations. Any misuse of fittings or acts that create a nuisance are considered punishable offences under the law.
The challan was issued under the provisions of the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002. This legislation empowers authorities to take action against passengers who cause inconvenience, nuisance, or potential damage to metro property. Depending on the severity of the offence, penalties can range from monetary fines to imprisonment, highlighting the seriousness with which such infractions are viewed.
Call for Responsible Behavior
MMMOCL urged all commuters, including public figures and celebrities, to set a responsible example by adhering to the rules designed to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience for everyone. The operator pointed out that with metro ridership continuously growing across Mumbai's expanding network, strict adherence to safety guidelines is more crucial than ever. This incident serves as a stark reminder that safety protocols must be respected by all, regardless of status, to maintain order and prevent accidents in the bustling public transport system.
