Vishal Bhardwaj Embraces Explicit Screen Violence, Traces It to Mahabharata Roots
In an era where blood-soaked narratives are commanding box office dominance, acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has openly expressed his acceptance of the increasing explicitness of violence in cinema. In a candid conversation with ANI, Bhardwaj shared his perspective on this cinematic trend.
"More than being normalized, I feel violence has become extremely explicit, which is personally fine for me," stated Bhardwaj. "I often say that we are a civilization born out of the Mahabharata. The violence in Mahabharata is unimaginable and so graphic that it has no limits. The killings, depicted with such rasa and love in the original text, are part of our origin story. That element of violence exists in our DNA."
Context of Violent Cinema's Box Office Success
Bhardwaj's remarks arrive against the backdrop of recent commercial triumphs of violent, mass-appeal films such as Animal, Marco, and Dhurandhar. These successes indicate a growing audience appetite for darker, more intense storytelling that doesn't shy away from graphic content.
The filmmaker elaborated on his own artistic philosophy regarding violence, emphasizing that it must be contextually appropriate. "There is something called poetic violence," he explained. "In my films, there are many references to this. My characters in O Romeo are gangsters, not poets or managers, so showing violence is necessary. If you don't engage with the contemporary language of filmmaking, you risk feeling dated. However, maintaining aesthetics within that violence is crucial."
Influences and Cinematic Mirror to Society
Bhardwaj also acknowledged international auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Wong Kar-wai, renowned for their stylized and artistic depictions of violence. He argued that cinema often serves as a reflection of societal realities.
"Another point is the kind and level of violence that exists and persists in our society today. If that is mirrored on screen, there's nothing wrong with it," he asserted. "And O Romeo is an adult film, intended for mature audiences."
Known for masterfully blending brutal themes with visual poetry in films like Maqbool and Haider, Bhardwaj continues this signature approach in his latest directorial venture, O Romeo.

The film features Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri in lead roles, supported by a robust ensemble cast including:

Released during Valentine's Week, O Romeo presents a complex narrative that aligns with Bhardwaj's vision of contextual and aesthetically framed violence.
