Under-Construction House Collapses in Delhi's Rohini Amid Heavy Rains
An under-construction house collapsed in the Rohini area of Delhi on Sunday following heavy rains that lashed the national capital. The incident occurred in the early morning hours, prompting a swift response from local authorities and rescue teams. According to officials, no casualties have been reported so far, and efforts are underway to ensure no one is trapped under the debris.
The Delhi Fire Service received a call about the collapse at around 7:30 am and immediately dispatched multiple fire tenders to the site. The building, located in the Mukund Vihar area of Rohini Sector 24, was reportedly vacant at the time of the incident, which likely prevented any loss of life. However, nearby structures were affected, and some vehicles were damaged by falling debris.
Rescue Operations and Response
Rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police, reached the spot and began clearing the rubble. A senior Delhi Fire Service officer stated, "We have deployed three fire tenders and are using cutting equipment to remove debris. The situation is under control, and we are checking if anyone is trapped." The area has been cordoned off, and traffic has been diverted to facilitate rescue operations.
The collapse comes as Delhi has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to waterlogging and structural concerns in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the region, predicting more rain in the coming days. Local residents reported hearing a loud noise around 6:30 am, followed by a cloud of dust. "We rushed out to see what happened and saw the building had caved in. It was a scary moment," said a neighbor.
Structural Integrity Concerns
According to preliminary investigations, the building was under construction and had been in progress for several months. Experts suggest that the heavy downpour may have weakened the foundation, leading to the collapse. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been asked to conduct a structural audit of nearby buildings to prevent similar incidents. An MCD official commented, "We will investigate the cause and take necessary action against those responsible if any negligence is found."
This incident highlights the vulnerability of construction sites during monsoon season. In 2023, several similar collapses were reported across Delhi-NCR, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of building codes. The Delhi government has directed the MCD to inspect all under-construction sites in the city and ensure compliance with safety norms.
Impact on Residents and Traffic
The collapse caused panic among residents of the densely populated Mukund Vihar area. Many were evacuated from nearby buildings as a precaution. Local authorities have set up a temporary shelter for those affected. The debris also blocked a narrow road, causing traffic snarls on the Outer Ring Road. Police have advised commuters to use alternate routes. A traffic police official said, "We have diverted vehicles via the Kanjhawala Road. The situation is expected to normalize by evening."
As rescue operations continue, officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any signs of structural damage. The Delhi government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for families affected by the collapse, though no fatalities have been confirmed. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events in urban areas.
