Yash Raj Films Firmly Denies OTT Release for Spy Thriller 'Alpha'
Following the massive success of Aditya Dhar's espionage film 'Dhurandhar,' industry speculation has swirled around another high-profile spy project: the upcoming Yash Raj Films production 'Alpha.' The film, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in lead roles with Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in pivotal supporting parts, had been the subject of persistent rumors suggesting it might bypass a traditional theatrical release in favor of a direct-to-OTT debut.
Studio Issues Strong Statement Against Streaming Speculation
In response to growing chatter, the makers of 'Alpha' have issued an unequivocal official statement, obtained by Variety India, to put all speculation to rest. The studio categorically denied any plans for a digital premiere, emphasizing their dedication to the theatrical experience.
The statement read: "Alpha is going to stream directly is a rumor that aims at putting a heroine-fronted film in an unflattering light. Yash Raj Films will never put films from its theatrical slate directly to streaming. We are a studio that takes immense pride in making cinematic experiences. Alpha is a tentpole movie for the company."
Further elaborating on their vision, the statement continued: "Alpha is our attempt at trying to mount something incredibly special. With one of the finest actors of our country, Alia Bhatt, headlining the film, along with another brilliant young actor, Sharvari. We are hopeful that we have made a good film in Alpha and it will entertain everyone and prove that audiences will give the same amount of love to this film as they shower upon other action movies."
Debunking the Rs 215 Crore Netflix Deal Rumor
Reports had previously suggested that Yash Raj Films had negotiated a substantial deal with Netflix India, valued at an estimated Rs 215 crore, for the digital rights to 'Alpha.' Despite the significant buzz generated by this purported agreement, the studio's latest clarification confirms that the film remains firmly on track for a theatrical premiere, with no immediate plans for a digital debut.
Release Date Dynamics and Connection to 'War 2'
The production timeline for 'Alpha' has seen adjustments. Initially slated for a December 2025 release, the date was subsequently pushed to April 17, 2026, to allow additional time for complex visual effects work. However, this revised date may yet face another change due to a potential box-office clash.
Salman Khan's anticipated film 'Battle of Galwan' is also expected to release on the same weekend. Industry analysts suggest the makers of 'Alpha' will likely seek to avoid a direct confrontation at the box office, potentially leading to a further schedule shift.
Directed by Shiv Rawail, 'Alpha' was first teased to audiences in the post-credit scene of the blockbuster 'War 2,' which starred Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. The teaser featured a brief cameo appearance by Bobby Deol, generating significant early excitement and linking the two YRF spy universe projects.
The firm denial of OTT rumors underscores Yash Raj Films' strategic commitment to the theatrical model for its major tentpole releases, positioning 'Alpha' as a cornerstone of their upcoming cinematic slate and a significant test for female-led action narratives in Bollywood.
