Aamir Khan's 'Dangal' Faces Potential Box Office Challenge from Upcoming Blockbusters
Since its release in China and Hong Kong in 2017, Aamir Khan's biographical sports drama 'Dangal' has held the title of the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. However, a prominent marketer has now boldly predicted that this long-standing record could be shattered by 2027, with three highly anticipated films poised to dethrone the cinematic giant.
Marketer's Bold Prediction: Three Contenders to Topple 'Dangal'
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Varun Gupta, the marketer behind upcoming projects like 'Dhurandhar 2' and 'Varanasi', expressed confidence that the era of 'Dangal' at the top is nearing its end. When questioned about whether 'Dhurandhar 2', 'Ramayana', or 'Varanasi' could surpass the monumental collections of 'Dangal', Gupta responded with unwavering optimism.
"Today, we are talking in February 2026. In 16 months, we can talk again, and we definitely will have crossed it. All three films mentioned—'Dhurandhar 2', 'Ramayana Part One', and 'Varanasi'—have a very clear potential," Gupta stated, highlighting the strategic release timelines and massive audience appeal of these projects.
The Unmatched Legacy of 'Dangal'
Released in India in December 2016, 'Dangal' achieved unprecedented success following its international debut in China and Hong Kong in May 2017. The film's performance in these markets provided a colossal boost to its overall earnings, transforming it into a global phenomenon.
- The China and Hong Kong release alone contributed approximately Rs 600 crore to the film's total revenue.
- In China, 'Dangal' amassed a staggering Rs 1305.29 crore, setting a historic benchmark for Indian cinema abroad.
- Globally, the film's collection stands at an impressive Rs 2070.3 crore, while it earned Rs 387.38 crore domestically in India.
Despite strong challenges from other blockbusters like 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' and 'Pushpa 2: The Rule', none have managed to surpass the financial milestone set by 'Dangal', solidifying its position at the pinnacle of Indian box office history.
Meet the Potential Record-Breakers
The three films identified by Gupta as having the capacity to overtake 'Dangal' are among the most eagerly awaited productions in Indian cinema, each boasting star-studded casts and visionary directors.
- 'Dhurandhar 2': Directed by Aditya Dhar and featuring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, this sequel is scheduled for release on March 19, 2026. It is expected to build on the success of its predecessor with high-octane action and compelling storytelling.
- 'Ramayana': This epic two-part adaptation stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Yash in pivotal roles. The first installment is set to debut on Diwali 2026, with the second part following on Diwali 2027. The mythological saga is anticipated to draw massive audiences across demographics.
- 'Varanasi': Helmed by acclaimed director SS Rajamouli, this time-travel adventure features Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Slated for release on April 7, 2027, the film combines Rajamouli's signature grandeur with a innovative narrative, promising a visual spectacle.
As the Indian film industry continues to expand its global footprint, the competition for box office supremacy intensifies. While 'Dangal' remains the undisputed champion for now, the cinematic landscape of 2026-2027 could witness a historic shift, with these three contenders vying to claim the top spot and redefine commercial success in Indian cinema.
