Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has shared a deeply emotional tribute to two close friends and key members of his team who died in a tragic road accident in Nigeria. The boxer, who sustained minor injuries in the same December 29 crash, described the late Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami as his "brothers" and "great men."
Heartbreak on a Nigerian Highway
The fatal incident occurred on the busy highway connecting Lagos and Ibadan in southwest Nigeria. The Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, his personal trainer Latif Ayodele, and his long-time strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami collided with a stationary truck. Ayodele and Ghami both died instantly at the scene.
Joshua, who is 36 years old and has family roots in Nigeria, was in the country on holiday following his decisive victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami on December 19. Following the crash, he received treatment for minor injuries and was discharged from a local hospital before returning to England.
A Champion's Grief and Gratitude
Last Sunday, Joshua returned to Nigeria to attend the funerals of his departed friends. On Thursday, he took to Instagram to express his sorrow and thank the global community for their support. His post revealed the profound personal loss he feels.
"Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers," Joshua wrote. He reflected on their bond, stating, "I didn’t even realise how special they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men."
Acknowledging the greater pain of the families, he added, "One hundred percent, it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers."
Legal Proceedings Follow the Tragedy
In the wake of the accident, Nigerian authorities have moved swiftly. The driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been formally charged with "dangerous driving causing death." The legal action underscores the serious nature of the crash that claimed the lives of two men integral to Joshua's training camp and personal life.
This tragic event has cast a shadow over the boxing world, reminding fans and athletes alike of the fragility of life beyond the ring. Joshua's heartfelt message highlights not just the professional relationship but the deep, brotherly connection he shared with Ayodele and Ghami, whose contributions were a silent force behind his championship successes.
