A Prequel Setting New Records
Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, who also headlines the cast, Kantara Chapter 1 serves as the prequel to his blockbuster 2022 film, Kantara. Shetty plays Berme, a forest-found boy adopted by a woman from Kantara. The film, reportedly made on a substantial budget of 125 crores, also features pivotal performances by Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram.
Since its release on 2 October, the film has shattered numerous records, establishing itself as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2025. Its accolades include becoming the second-highest-grossing Kannada film of all time and securing a place among the highest-grossing Indian films in history. In a landmark feat, it became the only Kannada film after KGF Chapter 2 to cross the 800 crore mark worldwide.
The plot of Kantara Chapter 1 delves into the origins of the traditions and ancestral conflicts introduced in the first film. Set in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka, it explores the early history of the Buta Kola ritual, masterfully blending local folklore, spiritual themes, and high-octane action to narrate a story about humanity's deep connection with nature and divine forces.
Following the overwhelming success of both Kantara (2022) and Kantara Chapter 1 (2025), Rishab Shetty has officially confirmed that a third installment, Kantara Chapter 2, is currently in the works. The film will be produced by Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda under the renowned banner of Hombale Films.
