Congress Raises Great Nicobar Project Concerns with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
Congress Writes to Rajnath Singh on Great Nicobar Project

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has written to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressing concerns over the Great Nicobar Project. In his letter, Ramesh highlighted issues related to the project's impact on indigenous communities and the environment.

Allegations of Misrepresentation

Ramesh stated that he has also written to the Tribal Affairs Minister, pointing out that the frequently asked questions (FAQs) issued by the government completely misrepresent the position regarding the fulfilment of the provisions of the Forest Rights Act, 2006. He argued that the FAQs give a misleading impression about the compliance with legal requirements meant to protect the rights of forest-dwelling communities.

Background of the Great Nicobar Project

The Great Nicobar Project is a major infrastructure initiative involving the development of a transshipment port, an international airport, and a power plant on Great Nicobar Island. The project has faced criticism from environmentalists and tribal rights activists who claim it will adversely affect the fragile ecosystem and the indigenous Shompen and Nicobarese tribes.

Congress's Stance

The Congress party has been vocal in its opposition to the project, demanding a thorough review and proper consultation with affected communities. Ramesh's letters are part of a broader effort to hold the government accountable for ensuring that the project adheres to all legal and constitutional safeguards.

In his communication, Ramesh urged the Defence Minister to reconsider the project's implementation and ensure that the rights of tribal communities are fully protected. He also called for a transparent and inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders before proceeding further.

The government, however, maintains that the project is crucial for national security and economic development, and that all necessary clearances have been obtained. The debate continues as various groups push for a more sustainable and equitable approach to development in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
