The officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj, has officially rejected a proposal seeking permission to produce a film on the life of legendary Sikh warrior Hari Singh Nalwa. This decision comes in light of a recent directive issued by the five Sikh high priests on December 28, 2025, which explicitly prohibits the production of films, animated content, and artificial intelligence-based videos depicting ancient Sikh warriors.
Directive Background
The directive aims to preserve the sanctity and historical authenticity of revered Sikh figures, addressing growing concerns over misrepresentation and commercialisation. The officiating jathedar clarified that Hari Singh Nalwa falls under the category of "puratan" (ancient) Sikh warriors, thereby making the proposal ineligible for approval under the existing ruling.
Proposal Details
The request was submitted by Bhanushali Studios, with co-producer Bhavesh Bhanushali writing to the Akal Takht seeking permission to produce a film based on the life and legacy of Nalwa. He had also requested a meeting with the officiating jathedar and members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). However, the proposal was declined in strict adherence to the directive.
Bagicha Singh, in-charge of the Akal Takht secretariat, confirmed that a written communication, along with copies of the directive in both original and English translation, has been forwarded to the producer. The communication advises caution in undertaking any future projects related to Sikh historical subjects.
This decision underscores the Akal Takht's commitment to upholding the dignity of Sikh history and ensuring that portrayals of its warriors remain respectful and accurate. Producers and filmmakers are urged to consult the directive before embarking on any projects involving Sikh historical figures.
