Love Story That Began on Silver Screen
One of Telugu cinema's most enduring love stories continues to thrive as Amala Akkineni opens up about her 33-year marriage to superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni. The couple, who tied the knot in 1992, first met on the sets of their 1987 Telugu film Kirayi Dada, marking Amala's debut in the Telugu film industry.
Between 1987 and 1991, their professional collaboration blossomed into romance as they starred together in five Telugu films out of Amala's total eleven Telugu projects during that period. Their on-screen chemistry gradually transformed into a real-life bond that would withstand the test of time.
Mutual Respect and Concerns in Marriage
In a recent interview with NTV, Amala reflected on what makes their relationship work after more than three decades together. She emphasized their shared curiosity and intellectual compatibility, stating that both she and Nagarjuna enjoy exploring diverse subjects and sharing their discoveries with each other.
When questioned about disagreements in their marriage, Amala clarified that rather than conflicts, they often express concern for each other's choices. "He may not disagree with me on certain things, but he often expresses concerns," she revealed, highlighting a particularly interesting aspect of their relationship dynamics.
Spiritual Differences and Protective Instincts
The actress turned animal rights activist and educator shared a specific example that demonstrates Nagarjuna's protective nature. "I am very spiritual and practice Vipassana meditation. This form of spirituality doesn't involve a guru; it's a skill you learn yourself," Amala explained.
However, her spiritual approach to life has attracted numerous gurus seeking her association or support for book launches. This is where Nagarjuna's concerns become particularly evident. "Nagarjuna gets extremely concerned. He fears I might get scammed," she disclosed, while acknowledging that while some spiritual leaders are genuine, others might not have pure intentions.
Amala appreciates her husband's input but maintains her independence, stating that while she values his opinion, she doesn't blindly follow his advice. This mutual respect extends both ways, with Nagarjuna also listening to her perspectives on his decisions.
Professional Collaboration and Lifestyle Choices
Beyond their personal life, the power couple collaborates professionally at Annapurna College of Film and Media in Hyderabad, where Amala serves as Director and Nagarjuna as Chairperson. According to Amala, Nagarjuna actively participates in the institution's daily operations and provides guidance across various aspects.
Their partnership extends to lifestyle choices as well, with Nagarjuna occasionally adopting Amala's vegan practices. "Nagarjuna sometimes goes on a vegan diet for an entire week and says, 'Wow, I'm feeling so good,'" she shared with a laugh, adding that he sometimes regrets returning to non-vegetarian food and questions why she didn't stop him.
Amala herself embraced vegetarianism at the young age of 11 and has maintained her commitment to vegan principles throughout her life. The couple are parents to son Akhil Akkineni, who recently married Zainab Rijdvee, adding another chapter to the Akkineni family legacy.
