American Surprised by Missing Home Essentials in India

Relocating to another country often brings a unique experience of discovering cultural peculiarities in unexpected places. Beyond differences in food, language, and customs, one of the most striking aspects is how daily domestic rituals vary. Aspects of everyday household life taken for granted in one country may seem rare or unnecessary elsewhere. Houses in foreign countries are specifically designed considering local lifestyle, climate, and other factors, leading to features that might be unimaginable in one's own home.

American traveler Kristen Fischer, known on Instagram as @kristenfischer3, was surprised by the number of things she found unusual when moving to India. In American households, appliances and technologies like central air-conditioning systems, dishwashers, washing machines, and automated garage doors are common. However, Fischer discovered that these items are not typical in Indian homes.

In a recent Instagram video, Fischer listed items found in many American homes that are still absent from Indian houses: thermostats and heaters, built-in ovens, garbage disposals in kitchen sinks, hot water tanks, tumble dryers, baths, and automatic garage doors. "These are some of the things I took for granted while growing up," she said. "Only when I shifted to India did I realize that these are exclusive to American homes."

What makes the video popular is not the luxury of the objects themselves, but how it shows how a nation's climate, culture, and way of life dictate its home environment. For instance, in America, during winter, drying clothes outside is impossible due to weather, but in India, ample sunlight allows balconies or rooftops to serve as dryers. Similarly, dishwashers are less common in Indian kitchens because many households prefer hand-washing utensils immediately after meals, especially cookware with oil and spice residue.

Central Air Conditioning Differences

Central air conditioning also differs significantly. American homes are often designed as sealed boxes for indoor living, using automation to regulate temperature during hot summers and cold winters. Indian homes, however, traditionally relied on ventilation, ceiling fans, and openness to the outdoors, including courtyards, long before air conditioning became popular.

Fischer's observations sparked a larger discussion about how contemporary Indian homes are evolving. Apartments in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram are increasingly adopting features like built-in ovens, modular kitchens, dryers, and smart homes. However, many Indian households still value flexibility, multi-functionality, and practicality over dedicated appliances.

The significance of Fischer's video lies not only in comparing two nations but in highlighting how homes reflect societies and cultures. Something as mundane as a bathtub or thermostat provides insight into how different societies approach daily life.
