A British traveller's attempt to spend 24 hours in India without any money has gone viral after an Amritsar shopkeeper responded to the challenge with an outpouring of warmth and hospitality that has touched viewers across social media.
The Viral Video
The video, shared on Instagram by the page @yugamlamba, begins with the traveller entering a clothing shop and admitting that he has no money. "I have no money," he tells the shopkeeper. Instead of showing concern, the shopkeeper smiles and replies, "No problem, bro. You're in India."
The traveller then explains that he is attempting a social experiment to spend 24 hours in India without spending any money. "24 hours in India with no money in India, let's see if I can do this," he says. Rather than turning him away, the shopkeeper immediately makes him feel at home.
A Warm Welcome
"What would you like to have, coffee or tea?" he asks. "Tea would be amazing," the traveller responds. The two then head to the terrace of the shop, where the visitor enjoys a cup of chai and biscuits while chatting with his host. During the conversation, the traveller asks the shopkeeper about his favourite thing about India. "Everything," comes the simple but heartfelt reply.
The video appears to have been filmed near the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Standing on the terrace, the traveller greets people passing by on the busy street below, using Punjabi and Hindi phrases that draw smiles from locals.
More Than Just Tea
The hospitality does not end there. Back inside the shop, the British tourist is served chole kulche, one of Punjab's most popular dishes. Taking a bite, he says, "Wow, this is the hospitality in India." The cultural exchange continues with Punjabi music, as the traveller is seen enjoying the tunes alongside his host.
Before bidding farewell, the shopkeeper places a scarf around the visitor's neck as a token of goodwill. Touched by the gesture, the traveller thanks him warmly, saying, "Thank you, brother."
Social Media Reaction
The wholesome interaction quickly resonated with social media users, many of whom praised the shopkeeper for showcasing India's culture of hospitality. "Proud of you, India ki laaj rakh li," wrote one user. Another commented, "Yugam you said 'No problem you are in India'. Welcome to India." "Congratulations, welcome to India," read another response. Several users said the video reflected the generosity and kindness that travellers often experience across the country, turning a simple challenge into a memorable cultural exchange.
The clip has since garnered widespread appreciation online, with viewers calling it a heartwarming example of India's famed tradition of welcoming guests with open arms.
