A stranger on a flight, a box of chocolates, and a split-second judgment. That was all it took for actor Anupam Kher to walk away with a lesson he says he won't forget anytime soon.
In a time when social media is filled with conversations about kindness, empathy, and the dangers of judging people too quickly, a recent experience shared by the veteran actor has struck a chord with many online. The story did not unfold on a film set or at a public event. Instead, it happened thousands of feet above the ground during what seemed like a completely ordinary flight.
What Anupam initially believed he was witnessing turned out to be something entirely different. By the end of the journey, a brief interaction with a fellow passenger had challenged his assumptions and left him reflecting on how little people often know about the lives of those around them.
The passenger who caught Anupam Kher's attention
Sharing a photograph of a man named David on social media, Anupam Kher opened up about an incident from a flight between Goa and Mumbai.
In his post, he wrote, “Thank you, David, for the lesson! Life is full of lessons. Last week, on a flight from Goa to Mumbai, I learned one. In the picture is David. When David boarded the flight, many people looked at him because he was overweight. He came and sat across the aisle from me. In the middle of the flight, he opened his bag, took out a huge collection of chocolates and sweets, and then walked towards the washroom.”
The actor admitted that seeing the sweets immediately led him to form an opinion.
A quick assumption
As David stepped away from his seat, Anupam believed he knew exactly why the chocolates were there.
Recalling the moment, he wrote, “I exchanged a glance with the gentleman sitting next to him and said, ‘He shouldn't eat so many sweets and chocolates!’ This was said out of concern! The gentleman smiled and replied, ‘Well, that's probably why he looks the way he does.’ A little while later, David came back, gathered all the sweets, and handed them over to the cabin crew.”
The unexpected gesture left the actor surprised and curious.
The reason behind the chocolates
Wanting to know more, Anupam approached David and admitted that he had made an assumption about him.
“I was surprised. So I told him, ‘I must confess, I thought you were going to eat all those chocolates yourself, and that's why you were overweight.’ He smiled and said, ‘I don't blame you for thinking like that! I have a medical condition. But I used to work with airlines, and I know what cabin crew members go through every day. So I like to bring them something sweet whenever I travel.’”
The explanation completely changed the actor's perspective.
A lesson that stayed with him
Reflecting on the interaction, Anupam said the experience reminded him how easily people create opinions about others without knowing the full story.
“What an outstanding human being. And what a lesson for me. How quickly we judge people. How easily we create stories about them without knowing anything about their lives. Thank you, David, for reminding me that kindness is often hidden behind appearances, and that the best people are sometimes the ones we understand the least. I asked him for a pic! He obliged! Thank you for the lesson my friend!”
Social media users respond
The post received positive reactions from social media users, many of whom appreciated both David's thoughtful gesture and Anupam's honesty in sharing the experience.
A user said, “Awesome..! Every little or big incident has a lesson for us, provided we have an eye to pick. Sir, you’re indeed ANUPAM..!”
Another wrote, “Whoa great, so concerned and so casually otherwise people click smiling pics handing over charity to poor people too.”
