A 21-year-old Austrian man, identified as Beran A, has pleaded guilty to charges related to a planned terrorist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The trial commenced on Tuesday, where he accepted most of the allegations against him.
Charges and Potential Punishment
According to an Associated Press report, Beran A is accused of being a member of a terrorist group and planning an attack. He could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Another suspect, Arda K., is standing trial alongside him.
Planned Attack Near Stadium
Authorities revealed that the accused intended to target people outside the Ernst Happel Stadium, where large crowds were expected. Approximately 30,000 fans gathered outside each night, while 65,000 were inside. Officials stated that his goal was to “kill as many people as possible” using knives or homemade bombs. Police raided his home on August 7, 2024, and discovered bomb-making materials. The concerts, scheduled to begin the following day, were subsequently cancelled.

Prosecutors further alleged that Beran A was involved in a broader conspiracy. Along with others, he planned attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024. Fortunately, these attacks did not materialize. A third associate attacked a security guard in Mecca and was arrested there. After these plans failed, Beran A returned to Vienna and began plotting the concert attack.
Taylor Swift Reacts to Cancellation
Taylor Swift later expressed her emotions online, stating, “Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating.” She added, “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt.” Fans from around the world had traveled to see her. Despite the cancellation, Swifties—as her fans are known—gathered in the city, sharing friendship bracelets and singing songs together. The case will continue in court on May 12.
