Autistic Teen Model's Journey Inspires Documentary

Kolkata: A short documentary titled 'Breaking the Frame', directed by Soumen Das, chronicles the inspiring journey of 16-year-old Baiduriyya Bakshi, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. The film was screened in the city on Wednesday, aiming to raise awareness and promote inclusivity for families with children on the autism spectrum.

Early Signs and Passion for Modelling

Baiduriyya's journey into modelling began unexpectedly during the pandemic. At just over two years old, he started idolising Bollywood star Salman Khan. 'He could hardly talk but started mimicking his pose. Many children with autism struggle before a camera. He did not. He loved to mirror. He took to underwater swimming, yoga and karate. His special educator saw the pull and told us to follow what lit him up,' his mother, Sumitra Paul Bakshi, recalled.

Guidance and Training

In 2018, the family travelled to Delhi to meet Pranav Bakshi, India's first model with autism. Sumitra returned with valuable guidance on how to nurture her son's talent. During the pandemic, they trained him at home, and a family friend shot his portfolio. 'My son has sensory issues. Sound and crowds can unsettle him. But he is so happy when the camera turns on,' she added.

He won the 2022 state award for People With Disabilities and began earning through professional assignments, including campaigns for biscuits and coffee.

Dreams and Aspirations

Baiduriyya is thrilled to have come this far. 'Someday, I wish I can meet Salman Khan. I have saved the money and will want to take a bus ride to the sea one day,' he said, before rushing off to the screening. The documentary 'Breaking the Frame' highlights his remarkable journey and aims to inspire others.
