Bharathirajaa, born in 1940, started his career as an assistant director before making his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed 16 Vayathinile in 1977. The film, starring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, became a landmark in Tamil cinema. He went on to direct over 50 films, many of which focused on the lives of rural communities, earning him the moniker 'Mannin Maindhan' (Son of the Soil).

His films often highlighted social issues, and he was instrumental in launching the careers of several actors, including Rajinikanth and Radhika. Some of his notable works include Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, and Mudhal Mariyathai. He also received the Padma Shri in 2004 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
