Bollywood Celebs Who Beat Cancer: Stories of Resilience

Cancer is a fatal disease caused by the uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells in the body. In Bollywood, several celebrated actors have shown extraordinary courage in their battle against cancer, turning their personal journeys into inspiring stories. Here are five Bollywood celebrities whose early detection to long recoveries highlight both medical progress and human resilience.

Anurag Basu

The famous film director found himself facing a more terrifying script in 2004 when he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. At the time, he was shooting two films, Murder and Saya. Anurag’s cancer battle was not merely a health issue but a life-altering journey filled with physical agony. His wife Tani was seven months pregnant with their daughter Ishana. He first noticed big blisters in his mouth but ignored them. The disease caused his internal organs to bleed, and his face swelled. He underwent chemotherapy, and his family and friends donated blood. He recovered and returned to filmmaking around 2006. The hit Gangster – A Love Story was the first film he directed after recovery.

Mahima Chaudhry

In 2022, actress Mahima Chaudhry revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She became an advocate for women’s health, highlighting that breast cancer can be asymptomatic. Speaking at the Young Women Breast Cancer Conference in 2025, she said, “There were no symptoms. I didn’t go for a breast cancer screening. I just went for a yearly check-up. I had no clue I had breast cancer. Cancer is something you can’t recognize on your own early. It can only be detected early through tests. So if you keep going for a yearly check-up, you will be able to detect it early and seek early treatment.” Her early detection accelerated her speedy recovery.

Kirron Kher

Actress and India’s Got Talent judge Kirron Kher was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in 2020. Her husband Anupam Kher released a statement on X in 2021, saying, “She is currently undergoing treatment and we are sure she will come out of this stronger than before. We are very blessed that she is being looked after by a phenomenal set of doctors. She's always been a fighter and takes things head on.” According to the Mayo Clinic, multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells that develops in the bone marrow, disrupting normal blood cell production, bone health, and immune function. The disease is chronic and progressive, but major treatment advances have extended patient survival. In multiple myeloma, malignant plasma cells multiply uncontrollably, producing excessive monoclonal immunoglobulin that can impair kidney function and cause bone lesions. Known for films like Devdas, Khamosh Paani, Veer Zaara, and Dostana, Kirron Kher achieved remission around 2022.

Sanjay Dutt

Sanjay Dutt’s life reflects Bollywood’s enduring paradox, moving from controversy to movie stardom. In 2020, he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. Initially, he had symptoms of back ache, which turned into a crucial battle. At that time, Dutt was also battling breathing problems, leading to suspicions of COVID-19. He underwent aggressive chemotherapy as suggested by his doctors. Throughout his recovery, he shared glimpses on social media, remaining positive despite exhausting sessions, often sharing messages of gratitude for the love and support from fans, friends, and family. Less than a year later, he returned to acting.

Manisha Koirala

Renowned actress Manisha Koirala was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. In an interview, she recalled feeling she “was going to die” when diagnosed. She wanted a second chance to “fix the score” as she felt she “was the one who ruined everything.” She was diagnosed with the last stage of ovarian cancer. Her struggle was laced with a desire for a second chance. “There were a lot of times I remember I would break down and I would see only darkness, hopelessness and pain and fear...I knew one thing, if I got a second chance at life, I had to go and fix the score because life gave me so much,” she said. She underwent surgery in New York and stayed there for five to six months. She was cancer-free by 2015 and made a comeback in her career.
