A recent video posted on X by Sarfaraz Zain has shocked the travel community, showing disturbing visuals that raise serious questions about train travel in India. The incident occurred on train number 12616, operating between New Delhi and Agra, a route that typically offers a glimpse of the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Instead, the journey turned into a moment of debate after a light conversation between a tourist and a transgender individual asking for money escalated into a vulgar assault.
What the Video Shows
The one-minute-long footage captures a transgender individual entering the compartment and demanding money from passengers. Initially lighthearted, the situation turned scary when the individual allegedly stripped, leaving passengers visibly shaken. Voices in the video reflect anxiety, with some passengers laughing while others appear calm, as if accustomed to such incidents.
British Tourist's Reaction
The British tourist, reportedly from London, is seen scared, repeatedly saying, “Oh my god, what are you doing? Why she wants to slap me? No no I dont have anything.” At one point, the transgender individual opened their pajamas and slapped the tourist. The tourist exclaims, “Oh god damn it, what’s going on here? I don’t have anything. STOP oh my god. What is this?” For the visitor, the journey was likely meant to be a gateway to India’s rich heritage, but instead became an unsettling episode.
Social Media Reactions
The video fetched strong reactions on Instagram. Dr. ashut0shmishra commented, “Why don't people slap and throw them out?” Another user, tingleilukyin, said, “Dear Tourist please avoid visiting or coming to India.” Tagging the Railway Minister and railways, Avishek SSwain wrote, “This is the gift of Indian government..this had to happen one day...Govt.never acted against them..Now it reflected as our Vishwaguru image before the world...???...@ashwini.vaishnaw @irctc.official.” Aary_k4u demanded action, stating, “@railminindia pls take action sir against these people it's unacceptable and disrespectful and it's not what india offer to guests!”
Railway's Response
Authorities have taken note. An official response from RailwaySeva on X read, “Matter has been forwarded to concerned officials for necessary action. - RPF India.”
Questions Raised
The incident raises serious questions: How was the individual allowed on the compartment without a ticket? Why was there no railway staff to monitor such situations? How safe are foreign and domestic passengers on trains when harassment can unfold openly in public spaces?
In the digital age, such incidents travel across borders, shaping narratives about safety in India. For a nation dependent on tourism, moments like these harm the reputation of “Atithi Devo Bhava.” As this incident shows, stories can be as unsettling as they are unforgettable.
