Cate Blanchett to Teach at Oxford as Visiting Professor

Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett is taking on a new role in her career as Professor of Contemporary Theatre. According to the latest reports, she has been named the next Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at St. Catherine’s College, University of Oxford. The appointment will see her take up the teaching role during the 2026–27 academic year. With this, Blanchett will bring her decades of experience in film, theatre, and performance to young aspiring talents.

Established in 1990 by acclaimed British theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh, the visiting professor's role has long served as a bridge between the arts and academia, inviting internationally renowned figures from theatre, film, and performance to engage directly with students and the university community. As part of her new role, Blanchett will contribute to a programme of lectures, conversations, and student engagement initiatives.

In a statement to Variety, Blanchett announced her appointment and expressed her enthusiasm for working with students. She said, "Art breaks down the borders and boundaries of our imagination; it poses questions and playing with and dissecting it expands and challenges our present reality. My years of creative practice have granted me the opportunity of sharpening my understanding of the transformative power of performance."

Blanchett continued, "The visiting professorship is an electrifying opportunity for me to be in direct, robust creative dialogue with the next generation of thinkers and creative doers. I look forward to beginning this creative rumpus."

Blanchett joins a long star-studded line-up of past visiting professors that includes Stephen Sondheim, Ian McKellen, Arthur Miller, Meera Syal, Tom Stoppard, Adjoa Andoh, Stephen Fry, Diana Rigg, Trevor Nunn, and Deborah Warner. This prestigious role allows her to share her extensive knowledge and inspire students through direct engagement.
