The Colorado Buffaloes community is mourning the loss of longtime sports reporter Adam Munsterteiger, who died on Tuesday, May 19, after dealing with serious health problems in recent weeks. Munsterteiger was widely known for covering Colorado football, basketball, and recruiting for BuffStampede.com, a site he helped build more than two decades ago. His death was confirmed by his wife, Liz Munsterteiger, through a heartbreaking post on X.
Liz shared that Adam passed away peacefully while surrounded by family. She wrote, “Adam passed at 11:11 pm. Asleep, peaceful, and surrounded by love and family. As he always used to say to me: ‘I love you! You’re my favorite noun.’” Soon after the news broke, fans, players, and members of the Colorado Buffaloes community flooded social media with emotional tributes. Many remembered him not only for his reporting, but also for the kindness and warmth he showed people over the years.
Adam Munsterteiger spent more than 20 years covering Colorado Buffaloes sports and recruiting
Adam Munsterteiger was the founder and publisher of BuffStampede.com since 2003. Over the years, he became one of the most trusted voices covering Colorado Buffaloes athletics. He reported on football, basketball, recruiting, and also hosted podcasts connected to the program. BuffStampede later became connected with On3 and Rivals, helping Adam reach even more college sports fans.
In recent weeks, Adam had openly spoken about serious lung-related health issues. During a BuffStampede podcast recorded from a hospital bed, he explained that doctors were running several tests after he became physically exhausted. He also revealed that he suffered internal bleeding during his hospital stay but later said he was improving.
At the end of April, Adam shared an update on X after leaving the hospital. He wrote, “After a week in the hospital, I’m headed home! Lots of recovery still needed but feels good to be back on my feet. Not fun to be in the hospital but huge shoutout to staff at @uchealth. They’re amazing.” Even after returning home, Adam continued covering Colorado sports. However, his health reportedly worsened again in recent days before his passing on Tuesday night.
The University of Colorado Boulder later shared a tribute on X, writing, “CU Athletics is heartbroken to learn of the passing of Adam Munsterteiger.” The school also added, “Adam was a light in our Buffs community who covered CU sports and shared student-athlete stories for more than two decades.”
Fans also shared emotional messages online. One supporter wrote, “Loved Adam’s work. He was so relatable and articulate about the Buffs. A quality person who will be greatly missed.”
