Dona Ganguly, the renowned Odissi dancer and wife of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, has taken legal action against persistent online harassment by filing an official complaint with Kolkata Police. The incident highlights the growing concern about cyberbullying and body-shaming targeting women on social media platforms.
Police Complaint Filed Against Unknown Persons
Dona Ganguly approached the Thakurpukur police station on Wednesday night to register her complaint regarding the disturbing social media activity. According to police sources, a formal case has been registered against unknown individuals responsible for the offensive content.
The complaint specifically mentions that a Facebook page has been continuously uploading obscene remarks targeting Dona Ganguly. The harassment reportedly intensified following her recent performance at the prestigious Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF), where she and her dance troupe performed to a song composed and written by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
History of Social Media Harassment
This is not the first time Dona Ganguly has faced such online harassment. Back in 2021, she had raised concerns about a fake Facebook profile operating under her name without her consent. The fraudulent account had posted several personal photographs of Sourav Ganguly, their daughter Sana, and Dona herself without authorization.
The previous incident came to light when one of her students alerted her about the fake profile, prompting her to take serious action. The recurrence of similar harassment patterns indicates a persistent problem that many public figures, especially women, face in the digital space.
Police Investigation Underway
Kolkata Police authorities have confirmed receiving the complaint and have initiated an investigation into the matter. The Cyber Cell has been assigned to investigate the case and identify those responsible for the objectionable content.
Police officials stated that they are examining the Facebook page mentioned in the complaint and are working to trace the individuals behind the account. The investigation will focus on violations under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and Indian Penal Code pertaining to online harassment and obscene content.
The incident has sparked discussions about the need for stronger measures to protect individuals from cyberbullying and body-shaming, particularly when it involves public figures who are constantly under public scrutiny. As the investigation continues, many are watching closely to see how authorities handle this case of online harassment against a prominent cultural figure.
