Dwayne Johnson has opened up about being overlooked during the Oscar race, even as his dramatic performance in 'The Smashing Machine' generated awards buzz. The 'Moana' star spoke about the emotional impact of not being included in the Best Actor nominations list and how it inspired him to move forward. His candid reflection on the awards season highlighted his resilience and determination to continue pursuing challenging dramatic roles.
Reflection on the Oscar Snub
In a recent interview with Esquire, Dwayne Johnson discussed his reaction to missing the Oscar nominations. 'It would have been incredible to get nominated for an Oscar,' he said. 'I realised very quickly that it's a rare thing to reach this pinnacle where you're even having these conversations. And it's exciting! It would have been amazing. I wish it had happened. But it didn't.' Johnson acknowledged the significance of an Academy Award nomination and noted that the past awards season has given him renewed motivation. 'In no uncertain terms did I ever think, Oh, that doesn't matter,' he explained. 'I always thought it mattered. And it has lit a fire in my spine…which is: Let's go back to work.'
Oscar Results and Golden Globe Recognition
The Oscar for Best Actor ultimately went to Michael B. Jordan for 'Sinners'. Other nominees included Timothée Chalamet for 'Marty Supreme', Leonardo DiCaprio for 'One Battle After Another', Ethan Hawke for 'Blue Moon', and Wagner Moura for 'The Secret Agent'. Although Johnson did not make the Oscar shortlist, his portrayal of MMA fighter Mark Kerr earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, an award that went to Moura.
Upcoming Dramatic Projects
Johnson has several dramatic projects in the pipeline, including a crime film set in Hawaii directed by Martin Scorsese. The 'Goodfellas' filmmaker praised Johnson's recent work, telling Esquire, 'Dwayne is remarkable in 'The Smashing Machine'. He and Benny, along with Emily Blunt and Ryan Bader, went deep together. They got into some challenging and uncomfortable territory that really stunned and enlightened me. Dwayne is one of a kind.' Benny Safdie, who collaborated with Johnson on his next film 'Lizard Music', also lauded the actor. 'His film knowledge is incredible,' the 'Uncut Gems' director said. 'I can talk about Jimmy Stewart's performance in 'It's a Wonderful Life' and relate it to Mark Kerr, and Dwayne knows exactly what I'm talking about. In the subtle breaths he was taking and the pauses he made—I realised I could ask Dwayne to do anything.'
Career Evolution and Motivation
Reflecting on his career evolution, Johnson explained what drives him. 'By the time I hit my fifth level—I'm 53—I was working hard just to find what peace meant,' he said. 'Things in my world had become less presentational, less broadcast-y, more 'I'm going to put in the work, and I'll keep it as quiet as I can.'' Johnson's focus has shifted from public visibility to meaningful work, demonstrating a maturation in his approach to selecting roles and projects that challenge him artistically.
