Mumbai: Veteran film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Pahlaj Nihalani passed away at the age of 76 on Thursday. He was reportedly suffering from a liver ailment. Nihalani was known for producing several successful Bollywood films, including 'Ilzaam' and 'Aag Hi Aag', which introduced actors Govinda and Chunky Panday to the silver screen, respectively.
Early Ventures and Contributions
Nihalani's first production venture was 'Haathkadi' (1982), featuring Reena Roy's popular song 'Disco Station'. He went on to produce a string of films such as 'Aandhi Toofan', 'Paap Ki Duniya', 'Aankhen', 'Gunaahon Ka Faisla', 'Mitti Aur Sona', and 'Shola Aur Shabnam'. For nearly three decades, he served as the president of the now-defunct Association of Pictures and TV Programme Producers.
Controversial Tenure as CBFC Chief
Nihalani courted significant controversy during his tenure as the chairman of the CBFC from 2015 until his removal in 2017. His stringent moralistic approach drew criticism, particularly when he demanded 98 cuts in the film 'Udta Punjab'. The filmmakers challenged his decisions in court and eventually got the film cleared with minimal edits. Critics pointed out the irony of his conservative stance on depicting Indian culture, given the bold content and songs in his own productions like 'Andaz' and 'Julie 2'.
Personal Life and Last Rites
Nihalani is survived by his wife and three sons. His last rites were performed at the Santacruz crematorium in Mumbai, where actor Govinda arrived to pay his respects. Govinda, who was launched by Nihalani, said, "Nihalani ji was like a foundation stone for many of us. Several artists, including me, who rose from impoverished backgrounds, received his support and encouragement. He shaped the careers of at least one dozen artistes. He had a rare ability to identify talent and help people rise to the skies of fame."
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences, stating, "The news of the demise of renowned film producer and former CBFC Pahlaj Nihalani is heartbreaking. His contribution to the film industry will be remembered forever. With his passing, the film world has lost an experienced personality."
