Flight Cadet Minakshi Kumari, one of the first five women to enter the National Defence Academy (NDA) and subsequently graduate as Indian Air Force (IAF) officers, was commissioned at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal on Saturday. Her journey began in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, in a family with a strong defence background. Her father, Subedar Major Ravinder Kumar, is a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army, and her brother serves as an Army Captain.
Historic Supreme Court Verdict Opened Doors
In mid-2021, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark verdict that shattered the glass ceiling, allowing women to enter the NDA. Minakshi seized the opportunity, cleared the entrance examination, and successfully passed the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. After a nine-month wait, she received her call letter and stepped into the NDA on August 6, 2022, making history.
Three Years of Transformation at NDA
The next three years at NDA were transformative. Amid rigorous training, punishment runs, and endurance tests, Minakshi discovered the essence of the institution: finding joy in exhaustion, laughter during difficult runs, and sisterhood in shared struggles. On May 30, 2025, dressed in gleaming white patrols, she crossed the hallowed 'Antim Pag' at Khetarpal Parade Ground, earning the prestigious title of ex-NDA.
Training at Air Force Academy
At the Air Force Academy, her existence was measured in sorties and the relentless pursuit of perfection. Amid the turbulence of training, her instructor served as a steady compass, guiding her toward the horizon. Flight Cadet Minakshi's achievement is not just about becoming an aviator; it is a testament to the fact that when doors are finally opened, women do not just walk through—they fly.
On Saturday, a proud father, her brother in Army uniform, and her mother watched with beaming smiles as Minakshi donned the air force uniform, officially becoming an IAF officer.
