Fossils: A Lifelong Musical Journey of Emotion and Nostalgia
Fossils: A Lifelong Musical Journey of Emotion and Nostalgia

For nearly three decades, Fossils has been more than a band to me – it has been a part of life itself. With Rupam Islam’s songwriting and stage presence, and the contributions of every musician who came along the way, Fossils built an identity that felt entirely its own.

The band has stood by me through heartbreaks, disappointments, and life’s uncertainties. No matter how often I return to the songs, they never lose their magic. My own journey with Fossils goes back a long way. I remember watching Rupam Islam on TV as a schoolboy and eventually being present at the launch of their first album. Looking back, Fossils grew alongside us.

Nostalgia and Connection

I grew up in the landline era, which is why Boba Telephone still feels nostalgic. For many of us, it captures a time when conversations, waiting, and life itself moved differently. What amazes me most is the consistency. Even after all these years, Rupam Islam’s energy and passion remain unchanged. The Fossils show I watched on Sunday felt just like the one I attended at Bidhannagar College in 2004 or 2005.

What makes Fossils special is its ability to connect with new audiences without losing the old ones. The fact that they can still fill Netaji Indoor Stadium speaks volumes. To me, Fossils is an emotion. Many of us who bought the band’s first album are now juggling careers, marriages, children, and responsibilities. Yet the moment songs like Hasnuhana or Nemesis start playing, we’re transported twenty years back in time. Yesterday, for a few moments, I forgot my age as I sang along and headbanged to the songs.

Remarkable Rise and Personal Moments

What makes Fossils even more remarkable is that they rose to prominence largely through their music, lyrics, and live performances, at a time when the industry was becoming increasingly driven by visuals and music videos. Then there are the moments that stay with you forever. Even today, when Rupam da spots me in the crowd and dedicates a song from the stage, it feels like an award.

Some bands entertain you, some influence you, but only a few become part of your story. For me, Fossils will always be one of them.
