Godman Murders Woman After Failed Rape, Kills Friend

A self-styled godman in Maharashtra has been arrested for the brutal murder of a 25-year-old woman after a failed rape attempt, and the subsequent killing of her male friend during religious rituals. The incident occurred on May 16 at an ashram located 340 kilometers from Mumbai.

The Victims and Their Visit

The woman, a private firm employee, was reportedly facing family disputes and job-related issues. Seeking solace, she visited the ashram with a male friend to participate in Shani Amavasya rituals, a day considered significant for spiritual practices. The godman, who presented himself as a spiritual leader, was known to conduct such ceremonies.

Failed Assault and First Murder

After the rituals, the godman attempted to sexually assault the woman while on a motorcycle. When she resisted his advances, he strangled her to death using a cloth and placed a heavy stone on her body to conceal the crime. The body was left at the scene.

Second Murder

Later, the godman returned to the ashram and attacked the woman's male friend with an iron rod, killing him. He then dumped the body in a secluded area to avoid detection. The motive for the second murder is believed to be eliminating a witness.

Arrest and Evidence

Police recovered a saffron-colored handkerchief near the second victim's body, which led to the godman's arrest. During interrogation, he confessed to both murders. He has been charged under sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigation is ongoing.

The case highlights the vulnerability of individuals seeking spiritual guidance and the dangers posed by fraudulent godmen. Authorities urge the public to verify the credentials of spiritual leaders before participating in rituals.
