Global appeal for 'Satluj' theatrical release
The IndUS Canada Foundation (ICF) has launched an international campaign urging the United States and Canadian governments to intervene for the theatrical release of the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer film 'Satluj'. The film was previously removed from the OTT platform ZEE5, sparking concerns over censorship.
Letters sent to White House and Canadian PM
In separate communications addressed to the White House and the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, ICF president Vikram Bajwa requested that 'Satluj' be permitted a nationwide theatrical release in India, alongside its planned OTT premiere. The foundation urged US President Donald Trump to raise the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for the lifting of alleged restrictions on its theatrical exhibition. Similarly, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was asked to advocate for the film's release in Indian cinemas.
Freedom of expression at stake
According to the ICF, restricting the film's theatrical release raises serious concerns about freedom of expression. Bajwa stated, 'The issue extends beyond the release of a single film. It is about reaffirming India’s commitment to democratic values.' He added that allowing the theatrical release would reinforce India's credentials as a vibrant democracy before G7 nations, sending a positive message about its respect for diverse voices and artistic expression.
Opportunity for India's democratic image
The foundation believes that this is an opportunity for PM Modi to demonstrate India's adherence to constitutional values of free speech and creative expression. Bajwa emphasized, 'Such a decision would send a positive message to the international community that India remains confident in its democratic institutions.' The ICF's appeal underscores the broader implications of the film's release for India's global standing.
