Actor Idris Elba, renowned for his acclaimed roles in television series such as 'The Wire' and 'Luther', has been honoured with a knighthood by King Charles III. The ceremony took place at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, recognising Elba's outstanding contributions to young people through his charitable initiatives.
Knighthood Ceremony at Windsor Castle
According to People magazine, King Charles knighted Idris Elba during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle for his services to young people. The actor received the honour in recognition of his charitable work and commitment to supporting youth communities. The Royal Family shared photos from the event on their Instagram account, showcasing the moment King Charles tapped a sword on Elba's shoulders as he knelt to receive the knighthood. The caption read: 'Congratulations to everyone who received honours at today's Investiture ceremonies, hosted by The King at Windsor Castle. Sir Idris Elba for services to young people.' Elba reposted the story on his Instagram, expressing gratitude to the Royal Family, writing: 'We are thankful. The work continues.' He also shared a photo with his wife, Sabrina Elba, at the castle grounds, tagging her Instagram and the Elba Hope Foundation, the charity the couple co-founded in 2022 to support diaspora communities and create greater opportunities.
Charitable Contributions and Recognition
Elba serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for The King's Trust and has credited his start in the arts to a grant he received from the royal charity when he was 18. The knighthood was announced in King Charles' 2026 New Year's Honours list and became official at the investiture ceremony. Speaking to People magazine at the 'Hijack' season 2 screening in January, Elba described the recognition as a 'real honour' and said it was still sinking in. He shared: 'I haven't really spoken about it, but I will say that it's a real honor to be recognized for the work. Especially trying to make as much noise for young people and the things that some of them are going through. So it feels like an honor. My family is honored by it. I don't even know how to talk about it.'
King Charles and Idris Elba's Collaboration
Idris Elba and King Charles recently teamed up at a Buckingham Palace garden party in London on May 14, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the King's Trust. The duo shared a DJ booth at the event, highlighting their mutual commitment to youth empowerment. King Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince William exclusively helm investiture ceremonies, handing out knighthoods, damehoods, and other recognitions after lists of honourees are announced twice a year.
