Indira Lankesh's Last Rites Led by Granddaughter Esha, Defying Tradition
Indira Lankesh's Funeral Led by Granddaughter Esha

In a poignant reflection of the values she championed, writer and entrepreneur Indira Lankesh's final farewell was led by the women of her family, with granddaughter Esha Lankesh performing the cremation puja and last rites at Bengaluru's Banashankari crematorium on Monday. Contrary to the convention of male family members conducting funeral rituals, Esha led the ceremonies before Indira's body was consigned to flames.

Family and Notable Attendees

Family members, including filmmakers Kavitha Lankesh and Indrajit Lankesh, were present for the ceremony. Friends, well-wishers and members of Karnataka's literary, cultural and film circles also gathered to pay their respects. Among those in attendance were actor Prakash Raj and transgender activist Akkai Padmashali, along with several writers, filmmakers, activists and longtime associates of the Lankesh family.

End of an Era

Indira, wife of the late writer, journalist and filmmaker P Lankesh and mother of slain journalist Gauri Lankesh, passed away on Monday. Her death marks the end of a significant chapter in one of Karnataka's most influential literary and progressive families. As mourners gathered to bid her farewell, many noted the symbolism of a ceremony led by women — a fitting tribute to a woman remembered for her independent spirit and feminist convictions.
