Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan have been married for over five decades. In a recent interview, the veteran actress opened up about her views on marriage and her advice for granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda. Speaking on Mojo Story with Barkha Dutt, Jaya admitted she would advise Navya to never get married, highlighting the changing dynamics of relationships in the younger generation.
Jaya Bachchan's Evolving Views on Marriage
The 'Guddi' actress shared her thoughts on love and companionship, even humorously suggesting that Amitabh Bachchan might call marriage the "biggest mistake" of his life. Reflecting on generational differences, she said, "I am a grandmother now, Navya turns 28 in a few days. I am too old to advise young girls today on how to bring up children. Things have changed so much. Today, these little children are so smart and they will smart you."
Questioning Marriage as a Social Necessity
Joya also questioned why marriage remains a social necessity, saying with characteristic humor, "I don't want Navya to get married. Delhi ka ladoo hai khao toh mushkil na khao toh mushkil. Just enjoy life. You don't have to make it... we didn't even sign the register in old times, later on, we got to know that we have to sign the register, and we signed the register after I don't know how many years of our marriage. That means we were living illegally."
Playful Banter About Amitabh Bachchan
A moment that quickly grabbed attention came when she was asked about Amitabh's opinion on marriage. Responding playfully, she said, "I have not asked him. He might say that 'biggest mistake of my life', but I don't want to hear that."
52 Years of Marriage and Love at First Sight
Despite her modern views, Jaya admitted that her own relationship with Amitabh began with deep affection from the very beginning. When asked if she remembered falling in love, she replied, "Do you have to dig into old wounds? I have been married for the last 52 years to the same man. Isse jada pyaar main nahin kar sakti hoon." She added, "It will sound outdated after me saying that don't get married... It was love at first sight."
The couple tied the knot in 1973 and remain one of Hindi cinema's longest-standing couples.
