Producer and songwriter Jimmy Jam has shared fresh recollections of Michael Jackson and Prince, revealing that the two global icons, while competitive, held deep respect for each other.
Jimmy Jam Reflects on the Icons' Relationship
Speaking to PEOPLE at the Hollywood premiere of the Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael', Jam discussed the dynamic between the late singers and their contrasting approaches to music. He emphasized that both artists aspired to be the best, yet never lacked admiration for one another.
"Probably were both competitive, but they also were very respectful of each other," Jam said, noting that their rivalry on the charts was accompanied by genuine appreciation for each other's talent and work.
Prince's Spontaneous Creative Style
Jimmy Jam described Prince's working method as fast and instinctive. He recalled that Prince could start a song in the morning and have it fully recorded, mixed, and ready by day's end. "Very spontaneous. That's the way Prince did it," Jam shared.
Michael Jackson's Meticulous Approach
In contrast, Michael Jackson was far more careful and detailed. Jam recounted spending three days changing just one line while working on the song 'Scream'. "Michael was very meticulous," Jam said, adding that Jackson would insist, "We have to challenge ourselves."
Mutual Influence Despite Different Methods
Jam noted that both stars had different creative styles but each influenced the other. He believes they learned from one another, even if the public often focused solely on their rivalry. "They may not have created music the same way in one room, but their mutual influence was clear," he said.
Remembering the Legends
Michael Jackson died in 2009 at age 50 from cardiac arrest, while Prince passed away in 2016 at age 57 due to an accidental fentanyl overdose. Jam fondly remembers Prince, saying the music icon still crosses his mind often. The new Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' was released in theaters on April 24.
